Athletics: Triumph for Harlow youngsters at Essex Cross-Country Champs

Athletics / Sun 29th Nov 2015 at 03:21pm

Harlow AC XON Saturday 28th November 2015 Harlow AC’s (HAC) juniors were out in force at the U13 and U15 Essex County Cross Country Championships held at Abbey Fields in Colchester. Freezing cold conditions with a fast and flat course greeted the athletes.

Pride of place went to Joe Morgan U13 who finished in bronze medal position in a nail biting 3 way sprint finish in 9.07 with Harry Parker (Thurrock Harriers) and Max Godfrey (Cambs AC) over 3K. Joe has gained automatic selection to represent Essex at the UK Inter Counties XC in March 2016.

The brilliant HAC U13 boys team of Joe Morgan, Kai Boggon (9.34), Ben Sloan (9.36) and Sam Sloan (9.57) pulled together and won the team race for the day to crowned Essex XC Champions 2015! This is a great achievement comfortably beating major clubs such as Woodford Green, Basildon, Chelmsford, Southend and Thurrock to name but a few in the process. With some key members of our U13 boys team missing, to have such a depth of strong talent in this age group and win a title, is really encouraging for the clubs future.

In the U13 girls 3K race Charlotte Pratt ran really strongly to finish in 5th place (10.02) and gain automatic Essex selection for the UK Champs. Savanna Sirkett (10.22) and Ellen Savidge (11.01) also ran really well.

In the U15 boys 4K the standard was, as usual, really tough and a very fast race, with the pace driven by Chelmsford’s Elliott Cordery, saw HAC’s Lewis Harknett hang on to take a well deserved 5th place (12.51) and gain Essex selection. Twin brother Owen ran really well (13.46).

In the U15 girls 4K race, Hertfordshire County Squad member Lottie Rowedder was ‘guesting’ and finished in a superb 6th place in 14.18.

The HAC endurance contingent are going from strength to strength and it’s heartening to see us regularly taking on premiership clubs and not just hold our own but beating them! We have a some new coaches and parent helpers at the club and a new wave of optimism is sweeping through as we continue onwards and upwards now. As a coach I couldn’t be prouder of how our athletes acquitted themselves at these championships”.
