Jobs Fair 3

By Nafisat Ishola

A CHAIN of job fairs is sweeping across Essex in hope of boosting employment, to ensure local people are aware there are many opportunities available.

The Essex Employment and Skills Board (ESB) is hosting these free events which are welcome to job seekers over the age of 16. Whether individuals are looking for a career change, or not even looking but happen to find something – with a range of different roles it’s ideal for people wanting to get back into work.

Giving everyone an opportunity to search for the unexpected, the job fairs will be held in shopping centres to give shoppers a chance to talk to local employers, who will have live job vacancies on the day.

Liz Gray, commissioner for employability and skills from Essex County Council, was part of the jobs fair taking place in Harlow on Tuesday 7th March.

She said: “The whole point is to raise awareness of employers across the county within the seven key grade sectors for the ESB. All of the employers that are hear have got live vacancies, if people came down they will have the opportunity to talk directly to those who are recruiting, find out a little bit of what the roles, have a bit more information about the organisation, with opportunities available to develop.

She added: “From people who are looking to get back into the job market, to those who are looking for a change, young people wanting to start their career – it’s really aimed at any working age adult it’s not just young people.

“The stands have had a lot of interest, there’s been people who have might not necessarily have been looking for something, but have spoken to some of the employers and it’s got them thinking about different opportunities.

“The whole premise of the board is to ensure that local people are aware of these local opportunities. For example, in Harlow with the growth of Standstead airport they’re going to be looking for a lot of new staff over the coming months and years.

“We are just trying to promote all the different opportunities available.”

Many employers attended the Harlow fair some including London Standstead Airport, The Princess Alexander Hospital NHS Trust, UPS, Essex Ambulance Service, Harlow College and many more. Job seekers were able to talk to employers informally on site whilst shopping in Harlow’s biggest shopping centre.

A company that designs and manufactures lights for trucks and trailers which is tested in Harlow had a stand in the jobs fair. We spoke to Sophie Gardner, marketing manager of the company named Truck-lite.

She said: “We are just trying to get the word out, promote the company a little bit more, hopefully people will come to us direct. We are just trying to get people walking past and people from Harlow College to come and have a look really – you never know what your not looking for.
