HASTINGWOOD-based charity, St Clare Hospice, is encouraging local people to join the team and get involved with volunteering in their flagship store located at the St James Centre, Harlow.

More than 230 local people, aged from 16 to 92 years, give their time to help out in St Clare’s eight charity shops, located across West Essex and East Herts, offering their invaluable help in sorting donations, providing excellent customer service and maintaining the shop floor.

Shop volunteer, Danielle Spicer, has been helping in the Debden St Clare shop for over two years. Danielle said: “Volunteering in a St Clare charity shop is an easy way to help people, and a nice little job to have. I’ve made so many good friends just from working here – both colleagues and customers. There’s such a happy atmosphere here because we are all close, and we get on all the time. It’s hard to put into words; it’s like one big family here.”

“It’s easy to think that these kinds of places are just charity shops, and to forget where the money is going. Yet, because the Hospice is local, the people around here usually have some association to St Clare, and do know exactly where their money is going and who it is helping. I love volunteering here because you can see that what you’re doing is helping, and making a difference in your local community – you can see it happening.

“I love it here – I really do. At first, I was very nervous to meet so many people, yet, everyone made me feel so welcome, and at home. It was like I had always been here. Volunteering for St Clare has given back to me, and helped me with building confidence. Now, I feel like I can do things that I wouldn’t have been able to do before.”

St Clare Hospice’s Harlow shop is currently recruiting for more volunteers to help in the store located at Unit2A, St James Centre, East road, Harlow, CM20 2BJ.
