Students ‘Shake-up Shakespeare’ to become published writers

A STAGGERING fifty-four Passmores Academy students are celebrating the amazing achievement of becoming published writers.

The students, who are all currently in Year 9, were selected by publishing company, Young Writers from hundreds of competition hopefuls across Essex and Hertfordshire. The poems were all written on the theme of Shakespeare and were required to include some aspect of the Bard’s life or work. Many of the students chose to focus on Macbeth, which they are studying as part of the GCSE English Literature syllabus.

Passmores already has a proven track-record for producing talented young writers. Last year, over forty of its students were successful in having their poems published in another of Young Writers’ poetry anthologies, The Poetry Trials.

Passmores Head of English, Maria Gladen said: ‘It’s an incredible achievement for our young people to manage to adapt another area of literary study into a modern form of poetry. They worked really hard on these poems, and managed to become published whilst writing about Macbeth or Shakespeare. It’s no easy feat to have skilfully written something which other people want to read and this is a brilliant accomplishment for our young people’.

The anthology titled, Shake-up Shakespeare, will be available to order online from Young Writers this autumn www.youngwriters.co.uk
