Pitney Bowes in Harlow hit by cyber-attack

Business / Sat 19th Oct 2019 at 05:49am

TECHNOLOGY company Pitney Bowes has confirmed it had been hit by a cyber-attack, as a number of customers reported on social media that they had experienced problems with mailing products.

In a statement, the company said a malware attack “encrypted information on some systems and disrupted customer access to some of our services,” but that it has “seen no evidence that customer or employee data has been improperly accessed.” Pitney officials said they did not believe customers would face other risks.

“Our technical team is working to restore the affected systems, and it is working closely with third-party consultants to address this matter,” the statement added. “We are considering all options to expedite this process, and we appreciate our customers’ patience as we work toward a resolution.”

The statement directed customers to a “system update” help page on the company’s website that outlined how they should respond. It did not specify when the attack started or say who might have perpetrated the breach.

Pitney Bowes has an office up on The Pinnacles in Harlow.

Disruption extended to customers using fulfillment, delivery and returns services in the global e-commerce division and those using presort services.

Several customers said on Twitter Monday that their shipping-and-mailing meters were not working.

“Pitney Bowes got hacked, and our postage meter is being held hostage,” Andrea Dembo tweeted at about 7 a.m.

“Same here, we’re in Ireland, and we’re locked out, too. Annoying!!” another user, Mike Devereux, tweeted in response, at about 8 a.m.

Mailing-and-shipping meters and accompanying services comprise a longstanding Pitney business. In 2017, the company launched its SendPro C-Series that lets offices choose delivery options and track letters, parcels and large flat envelopes that they send.

SendPro C-Series uses cloud technology. All models are based on an integrated Android operating system, “making this an open platform capable of running any combination of thousands of Android applications,” the company said when it launched the platform.
