Harlow Scouts do their duty right through pandemic

PANDEMIC, lockdown etc has been quite a challenge for Harlow Scouts but they have all done exceptionally well.
Clare Collins has sent us a report.
Clare said: “The last 18 months has been incredibly unusual… not only have we at Harlow District Scouts been coping with the craziness of Covid 19 lockdowns but we have had a change of District Commissioner.
Sarah Storey took over from our previous DC who had been in place for over five years at the same time as Covid hit us all. With the plans for a smooth joint handover going out of the window, we was all catapulted into disarray when scouting as we know it stopped on 23 March 2020. Thank you Sarah for taking over and leading us in the strangest of times.
What has happened since then is a mixture of zoom calls, scouting at home activities and eventually getting back to face to face meetings. Harlow District Scouts is made up of 9 Groups. With 105 leaders, committees members and supporting adults, ensuring that our 334 young people within our youth membership (as at our last census in January 2021) have kept connected to their friends and communities, learning skills for life and enjoying lots of fun, still achieving their badges when they could.
Throughout the months, no matter if our volunteers were key workers or furloughed, they still did all they could to ensure scouting was relevant and available as soon as they were able to continue, in any way they could. For this we want to say a big THANK YOU.
We have been able to run virtual camps at home, join in national campaigns like the Scouts Race around the World, raising money for our own less fortunate scouters, played games online and joined in with virtual events like carol concerts or had guest speakers over zoom. We have also had a record number of badges being handed out to our young people over the last year! For this we want to say a massive THANK YOU.
Now we are all looking to the future, getting back to face to face scouting again and enjoying all the traditional aspects of campfires and marshmallows…. And even though we still have some restrictions our leaders, committee members and supporting adults are doing everything they can to ensure we can continue…. And for this during 2021 volunteers week, we want the whole of Harlow to know that we are very truly grateful for all our adult volunteers.
Whether they give us 10 minutes of help, guide the groups through committee meetings or are a trained leader giving up hours of their own time to the young people in their communities… we want to say a MAHOOSIVE THANK YOU.
Scouting would not happen without our awesome volunteers and although we know our volunteers also get a lot out of volunteering with the Scouts #GoodForYou, it is vital that we, as Harlow District Scouts take the time to say thank you too.
We have many flexible opportunities so if you would like to volunteer for Harlow District Scouts too then contact [email protected] for more information.
