PENCILS and paper were replaced with slates and fountain pens as children explored the Victorian era.

Year 4 pupils at Roydon Primary Academy, in Roydon, took a trip back in time to experience life in Victorian times.

They got to find out what it was like to learn in a Victorian classroom on the eve of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 1897.

Pupils explored suitcases and genuine artefacts, using their newfound historical detective skills.

The workshop formed part of their history lesson on Victorian leisure.

Teacher Valerie Vyapury said: “Pupils came into school dressed as Victorian children and had the chance to use fountain pens, slates and play Victorian games.

“The children enjoyed the day and learned a lot.”
