HARLOW Athletic Club star Lee Wood produced an outstanding performance to win the Lea Valley Velo Park Half Marathon on Sunday.

Lee produced a time of 1 hr 10 min although the ever-modest Lee think the time keeping may be wrong.

Lee may just be being cautious and managing expectation as he has just five weeks left until the Virgin London Marathon.

Lee has gained automatic qualification to the championship race and his preparation seems to be going very well.

Even in his reflection on the race, you sense how seriously Lee takes his running and how he approaches it from every angle.

On his victory on Sunday, Lee said: “It was an interesting race, having lapped everybody except for the 2nd and 3rd place by the half way point (the course is mile long laps of ups and downs).

“I took a more sensible approach of running the second half at marathon pace. A few tactics were in my mind prior to the race, and this was one of them; the reason being that this was only a tune up for my A Race.

A dress rehearsal for London Marathon that ultimately didn’t matter for much more than testing my nutrition in the week leading up, my hydration and fueling strategy on the day, and that my race day kit wasn’t restrictive.

“In the past I’ve ran a tune up race so hard and didn’t have enough time to give my body to recover afterwards that it was detrimental to my “A Race”. Essentially detraining from that point on.

“So I’m pleased to have learned from that experience and to have come out of the race safe and ready to continue training with a 20 mile run the next day”
