HARLOW CC First XI produced a stunning performance in their rearranged League Cup second round tie at Ilford on Bank Holiday Monday. Tom Garner’s side may have expected a stiff challenge from a team two divisions above them but they belied the gap between the sides to dominate and eventually win by 7 wickets with plenty of overs in hand.

Batting first Ilford were on the back foot from the outset with the skipper opting to open with the spin of Rhys Stewart and how that decision paid off. Stewart bowled superbly for his 9 overs 4-27 that included all of the home sides top four batters. Rhys was ably backed up by fellow spinners Chris Whitworth (1-24 from 9) and Matt Fisk (2-17 from 5) whilst pacemen Senior, Matthews and Rafiq maintained pressure without taking a wicket.

Having restricted Ilford to just 167-7 in 45 overs Harlow needed a steady start to calm any nerves against their First Division opponents but lost key batter Whitworth cheaply. Nevertheless, Syed Hassan and Gull Hassan both batted superbly making 63 and 56 respectively. By the time they lost their wickets the job was almost complete and Max Baulcomb (20*) and Zabi Hakimi (16*) completed the job for a wonderful win.

Harlow through to Round 3 then for the first time in years. Their reward is a trip to the Manchester City of the Essex Senior League in reigning Premier League Champions Brentwood who contain a squad full of current Essex stars and other First Class cricketers.
