Please support St Clare Hospice: Jennie’s story

IF there’s one thing Yvonne taught her family, it was to make the most of every day. Witty and wise, Yvonne had an infectious zest for life and always followed her passions. Even after she was diagnosed with cancer, she studied for a Masters degree and inspired everyone who was lucky enough to know her.

Despite her brave and positive outlook, Yvonne’s terminal diagnosis ultimately meant she’d require professional care as her condition got worse. Thankfully, with your support, St Clare Hospice made sure Yvonne could continue living as independently as possible, for as long as possible.

When Yvonne was diagnosed with secondary breast cancer, St Clare quickly became an important part of her life. She would come to the Hospice café for much-needed time and space, and support from people who understood what it was like to face such a devastating diagnosis.

It was important to Yvonne that she was cared for at home – and just as important to her family that she still received expert hospice care. That’s when St Clare really came to our aid. They arranged everything to ensure that Yvonne was comfortable, and nothing was too much trouble. They even brought her a special bed to help when she couldn’t move around.

During those really difficult weeks, St Clare gave Yvonne so much more than medical care. They gave her the chance to spend that precious time in her own home, surrounded by her loved ones, just as she wished. Every time the team arrived, they came armed with the right skills, supplies and smiles to brighten both her day, and the day of her family. They stopped us feeling overwhelmed with the level of care Yvonne required, and we couldn’t be more grateful for that.

Losing Yvonne was devastating for the whole family, but I can’t imagine how much harder it would have been without St Clare. That’s why, to honour Yvonne’s memory, I decided to complete a sky dive to raise money for St Clare Hospice last year. As daft as it sounds, finding the courage to jump out of a plane felt like the least I could do after witnessing Yvonne’s bravery and the incredible care she received in her last weeks. Yvonne was the amazing matriarch of our family, and raising money for St Clare Hospice helps to keep her memory alive.

I really hope you’ll find a way to give again using the donation slip below and I promise that your support will provide the love, kindness and care that keeps families strong in their weakest hours.
