Cricket: Harlow under 9s win thrilling friendly against Sawbridgeworth

Cricket / Wed 5th Jul 2023 at 06:28am

HARLOW’s Under 9s produced an excellent performance against local rivals Sawbridgeworth on Sunday.

The game was played under “Terrier” rules so four pairs of batters and starting total of 200 with 5 runs off for every wicket lost.

Harlow won the toss and bowled with Charlie J and Jorge G keeping it tight early. Charlie took two wickets in his second over to set the tone. All other bowlers generally kept it straight and with three more wickets taken (two by Teddy and one from Alfie) they were chasing 279 to win.

With the words ‘Don’t get out!’ ringing in their ears the Harlow innings began.

Harry and Alfie followed the instructions and were not dismissed. Harlow were to only lose three wickets in total (two to run outs).

Charlie and Teddy took centre stage as the final pair needing 17 runs to win so long as we didn’t lose a wicket.

Charlie, in particular, was severe on anything short smashing it for six over the leg side boundary.

We quickly raced beyond the required total with Charlie hammering boundaries at will. At the end of his innings Charlie had scored his maiden half century for the club (aged 9!!!) with 60* including six 6’s. Teddy played a superb second fiddle helping us close on a net 321 for a 43 run victory.

A day Charlie and his teammates will never forget!.

Well done to all who took part from both clubs.
