Can I Take MOT Early – and Do Electric Cars Require an MOT?

These two questions come up over and over again, so here are some clear and concise answers. Let’s take a look at each in turn – but first a quick reminder about the MOT test and who needs one: all cars over three years old need to have a compulsory MOT Check in UK. Visit Elite Direct to get your car tested if it is approaching that milestone, or indeed, if it is older than three and coming up to the anniversary of its registration date.

Can I Take My MOT Test Early?

The simple answer to this question is ‘yes’, but the question is not as simple as it seems: there is seldom any reason to take an MOT massively earlier than the registered date. However, it does happen from time to time: you might be going travelling and will be away during your MOT test period; you might have had the car off-road for a while and ‘lost’ the registration date and want to reclaim it for simplicity’s sake, or you might be wanting to sell the vehicle and feel that a longer MOT and insurance period will get you a better price. If you renew your MOT early like one month, minus one day before the renewal date, you will lose your anniversary date. So, for example, if your car was registered on the 1st of May, you can get your MOT done on the 2nd of April, and then the new anniversary date will be 2nd April of next year (you will, effectively, be issued with a certificate for 12 months.) But, if you want to keep that anniversary date, you have to get your MOT done on the current anniversary date. There is no grace period on expired MOTs, so make sure you renew sooner rather than later!

Do Electric Cars Require an MOT Test?

The MOT test was introduced in 1960, long before electric cars were invented, so it is a common query. But the purpose of the MOT was to ensure that all vehicles on the UK’s roads were compliant with road safety rules and regulations, no matter whether they run on petrol, diesel, or electricity. So, yes, your electric car will require an MOT (legal proof of roadworthiness) when it reaches its third birthday, to be renewed each subsequent birthday.

In summary, most UK vehicles, including electric cars, must undergo an MOT test before they can be registered. Although there is some flexibility in the timing of an MOT test, but it is generally a good idea to take the test within one month before the previous certificate expires.
