Accessible swing seat installed at the Norman Booth playground in Old Harlow

Church Langley and Newhall / Thu 25th Apr 2024 at 01:01pm

MEMBERS of the resident-led campaign group working to improve the accessibility of playgrounds in Harlow have achieved their first success. Harlow Council has installed a new swing seat at the Norman Booth playground that is specifically designed for use by disabled children. Joel Charles, Mike Garnett and Sue Livings have worked alongside the group in Old Harlow to support the aims of their campaign.

It is clear that Harlow Council has taken residents’ concerns seriously about the need to make sure that the Norman Booth playground is an environment that children of all abilities can enjoy.

The campaign group is also keen to ensure the council explores more ways to invest in adaptations that will enable disabled children to visit other play areas.

Today’s news means the work to make Harlow’s playgrounds more inclusive has begun.

Rita Farrant, an Old Harlow resident who has been leading the campaign, said:

“My granddaughter has already been able to use the new swing and is looking forward to going back to the Norman Booth playground. I am grateful to the council for responding quickly, it is encouraging that adapting play equipment for children of all abilities to use is a priority in Harlow.”

Joel Charles, Mike Garnett and Sue Livings have also welcomed the council’s response:

“Making sure disabled children in Old Harlow feel confident and excited about visiting their local playground is something about which we care passionately. It is good news that the Norman Booth playground is now more accessible. We will continue to press the council to invest in a wider range of play equipment for disabled children to use in the town.”
