Letter to Editor: Labour pleased work has begun on neglected site in town centre

Politics / Mon 13th May 2024 at 09:47am

Dear Editor,

I AM pleased to see that in response to questions from myself and Cllr Tony Edwards at Full Council, work has finally begun on the dilapidated site at West Gate in the town centre.

For far too long, this area has been seemingly neglected by the development company, resulting in internal and external damage to the former shop units and debris scattered in the surrounding area.

During the election campaign, Harlow Tories promised to begin building work “in days” on this site so I and many others will be watching with interest to see if their promises are made of concrete or are built on sand.

Cllr Jodi Dunne, Labour and Co Operative Bush Fair.”

Work hasn't started. All they've done is put a gate up to stop all the people who were tresspassing on the wasteland of abandoned shops and those who were flying tipping. It's just a gate no more work has started, and none is planned.

Is there a schedule of works for these projects? Given Cllr. Swords bravado and rhetoric can he now outline the schedules and timelines for all these projects: I suspect not.

Resident, very good point! They'd be like a dog with a bone. As is Gary Robert's and Worried in Harlow's points. It's like many people just simply do not believe what comes out of the mouths of conservatives anymore. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice etc etc.

I knew it was trite but the rose tinted account known as Tory (bull****) spin reared its ugly head and many voters who've since wizened up, fell for it. Times have changed and yes Mini Bojo, Dan Swords duth have egg on face. Happy Muse.

Why are local politics subjected to such petty squabbling

I opened this story thinking finally Labour have realised the way to engage with people is to get behind and support the re development. The re development is good for the town, it has taken a long time to get going, so I am saddened to see more local political squabbling. Is it any wonder the turn out is only 30%

Adam, Pete, asking for accountability or promises to be fullfilled isn't squabbling. I think too that low turn out is people fed up with nobody leading the country for the good of the people and no party stands out to bring real change. One more thing, squabbling, please watch Rishi's statement today... and that comes from the leader.

Why did Labour let that area & the rest of the town get so run down during their years in power I have to wonder??

Was the water gardens rebuilt under Labour?

Amused
2024-05-13 21:09:41

Trace who sold off the old Town Hall to make the Water Gardens and committed to a Civic Centre that Harlow Council doesn't own in exchange?

Not so amused
2024-05-13 21:28:16

Civic centre is owned by the Council

Trace

Amused, no idea, not from Harlow originally. I just remember being in Harlow for work, thinking it was an awful run down looking town, to coming back a few years later for work thinking how much better that corner looked, it was impressive. But it was under Labour, yeah?

Trace @ 2024-05-13 13:20:40. I think Dan Swords has swept it under the carpet. Someone on here suggested Your Harlow look into it but nothing’s appeared to have happened, also someone else said the Electoral Commission should look into it

The letter should have explained that work to secure the site has commenced. There is no sign that Strawberry Star are going to start to develop the site any time soon, indeed two shops in the block remain occupied. Cllr Swords has boasted that the Council have started regeneration of the Town Centre and are the largest land owners (they are aren't), but the fact is about a dozen land owners own the rest of the Town Centre and they are clearly in no hurry to get on with work. Planning permission has already been in place, in some cases for years, to turn Market House into flats, to build another flat block behind it, to build flats on Kitson Way car park, to build a large 150+ flat block next to Terminus House, to build flats next to the old cinema and more flats on top of Adams House. None of this will take place, as already evidenced until the owners can maximise their profit. In the meantime, despite the boarding up referred to in the letter, all the windows in the upper floors have been smashed out, the place looks like a bomb site.

If it had been under labour these last few years it would still be shops as no money would have been raised to do anything, that's why I it needs rebuilding, fortunately the Conservative council saw fit to raise the funds and so in time once all the plans and tenders and contractors become available we should see some action.

Derek, the land referred to in this article is owned by Strawberry Star, not Harlow Council. They have had Planning permission to develop it for some considerable time, but they are land banking, waiting to maximise their asset, just as the owners of Kitson Way car park, Market House, Terminus Street car park and other land owners around the town centre and beyond.

So, is this letter from Harlow Labour Cllrs congratulating the Cons for starting work is pure sarcasm?!
