Education: Secondary / Mon 10th Feb 2025 at 04:57pm

THE headteacher of Sir Frederick Gibberd College has decided to leave the school.
The following letter from the chief executive of BMAT, Helena Mills has been sent to parents.
Dear Parents,
We have some big news for SFG, which is that Dee Conlon has decided that it is time to leave us.
She has accepted a headship role at another school which will be announced shortly.
Dee has been with us at BMAT for 12 years and was a driving force in setting up SFG on behalf of
the trust. She has devoted six years to the pupils, staff and community of SFG. We all extend our
sincere gratitude to Dee for her dedication, commitment, and contributions over the years.
Although we will be sad to see her go, we wish Dee every success and happiness in her new job.
She departs with fond memories of her time with wonderful students and exceptional colleagues, to
whom she sends her warmest wishes for the future. I hope we will all have a chance to say goodbye
to her in due course.
We have already commenced the process of recruiting a replacement for Dee and in the meantime,
John Blaney will act as executive head working closely with SFG’s two excellent deputy heads, Ms
Leverington and Mr McCaw. John knows the school and community very well.
I know SFG has been through quite a few challenges in the last year or so. Let’s hold on to the special
character.”
Disappointed Dee has decided to leave, her vision for the school was one of the main reasons many chose sfg. I also feel sorry for the children who have had to endure so much change in such little time.
This is not good news for the school or Harlow, but likely inevitable. I don't think Mrs Conlon has enjoyed the support of the Trust she deserved or earned. The school has lost some great staff with turnover. Good teachers are valuable and they need to be looked after. Just list out all the events Mrs Conlon has had to deal with, and true incompetence from the department of education re the school buildings provision. Wishing her the very best going forward, she's going to be in demand with stella aspirations. That said, the school has two great deputy heads in line, Mr McCaw and Mrs Leverington, big shoes to fill, but wish them well too.
Gutted, such a loss to SFG. Dee Colon is an amazing Headteacher who gave her absolute all to SFG and her staff/ students through so so many challenging times. I don't think she's had the higher levels of support that she needed or deserved at all. We're all going to miss her greatly. Wishing Mrs C the very best in her new role, they have gained a true shining and inspirational star!
Matthew, you are right, it is quite insensitive and BMAT would have paid for it to sound as such!
Dee Conlon’s departure is a great loss to the pupils. Her expectation for each child to strive to be the best version of themselves both from an academic and behavioural perspective was one of the reasons I chose SFG for my son . He loves it there and it ideal for him . All the teachers I have encountered have been responsive and supportive which is a style that is fed from top down. I wish Mrs Conlon well, whichever school she moves on to is lucky to have her
Another blow for the students and staff. They have had no stability at the school since it first opened with everything that has gone on.
There are too many schools under the BMAT umbrella and too many academies full stop. These are businesses not schools. Regardless of whether Dee Conlon walked or was pushed it's just another example of how easy it is for these trusts to disregard what they have. It's so easy to let staff go or get rid of without any thought for the disruption to the pupils. If they want you out you are out. So many staff have lost jobs with the academy takeovers while they streamline for their own teams. At the top of BMAT is a connection to most of the Harlow schools. It's all wrong. As for Dee Conlon, I hope she wasn't pushed but chose to get out from under all the power driven people who are unbearable to work for.
It's a very upsetting news to know Mrs Conlon is leaving. she is the only reason I choose SFG for my daughter. Throughout her school days, Mrs Conlon had supported in all aspects of study and I am proud to tell that my daughter had passed GCSE with flying colour. Mrs Conlon is the reason we decided to keep her at SFG for A levels. Now I am worried about the standard of the school.
