The Valley Parade Tragedy: The Heath Players reading of The 56

Entertainment / Sat 7th Jun 2025 at 10:58am

BACK in 1985, former chair of the Heath Players drams society, Mark Ratcliff was a student at Bradford University.

Mark went to the Bradford City v Lincoln City game at Valley Parade, where 56 people lost their lives when part of the ground was engulfed in flames.

Mark wanted to pay his own tribute, so he invited a number of members of Heath Players to his house in Hatfield Heath, where they read from the award winning play, The 56.

Usually, Your Harlow is behind pen and pad at the Heath Player productions but on this occasion, we felt it appropriate to film this special performance of The 56.

The film of the Bradford City fire is used on union safety reps courses and on LFB fire marshal courses. The youngest victims were four eleven year olds and the oldest 86. It was a terrible day for the Greenwood, Ormondroyd and Stockman families who each lost three members of their family in the fire. Worse still, the Fletcher family lost four.
