Letter to Editor: Why are people being allowed to smoke in hospital grounds?

Health / Fri 1st May 2026 at 07:10am

Dear Editor,

I HAVE been visiting my husband in hospital on a daily basis for the last week or so and when ever I have visited I see a group of individuals sitting smoking hear the front entrance zebra crossing in the car park smoking away, by a no smoking standing notice/billboard.

It was only today that I saw a security guard and approached him asking about the no smoking policy and that these ladies were brazenly sitting next to the sign. The security sighed and said what do you want me to do? I said you could ask them not to, The security man said he told them earlier but they ignored him and they cannot force them not to do it. I asked him what the point was in having no smoking rule on the premises. He said well it is only a policy, despite it stating quite clearly on the hospital entrance sign that it is illegal to do so.

Apparently it doesnt matter whether you smoke on the hospital premises because nothing happens if you do.

What I also dont understand is how some people just dont think the rules apply to them. My partner who has lung disease cannot sit outside to get fresh air or sunshine because of the selfishness of others.

Regards
