New blood testing facility officially opened at The Harvey Centre

A NEW community blood testing facility at The Harvey Centre in Harlow has been officially opened by The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust (PAHT) and Health Services Laboratories (HSL).

The purpose-built clinic, which opened to patients in April, has relocated routine blood testing services from The Princess Alexandra Hospital site into The Harvey Centre, improving accessibility and convenience for local people.

The official opening event on 21 May brought together partners, colleagues and stakeholders to celebrate the collaboration behind the project and its role in transforming how healthcare services are delivered within the community.

The new facility supports around 300 patients each day and provides improved access through better transport links, easier parking and a more welcoming environment for patients attending appointments.

Speaking at the opening event, Thom Lafferty, Chief Executive of PAHT, said: “This is about much more than opening a new facility. It is about transforming how we deliver healthcare for our communities and making essential services easier to access, more convenient, and better aligned with the needs of the people we serve.

“By relocating blood testing services into the heart of Harlow town centre, we are improving accessibility for patients while also freeing up valuable clinical space within the hospital for more complex and urgent care.

“This new facility demonstrates what can be achieved when the NHS, local government and strategic partners work together with a shared purpose, and I am incredibly proud of what we have achieved together.”

David Byrne, Chief Executive of HSL, added: “Diagnostics are the foundation of modern healthcare and often the starting point of a patient’s healthcare journey. They enable earlier intervention, more effective treatment, and ultimately better patient outcomes.

“Diagnostics are central to prevention and creating opportunities to identify risks and conditions earlier, often before symptoms appear.

“This new facility reflects our shared commitment to delivering better care for patients today and in the future, and we look forward to serving the community for many years to come.”

The move is part of wider ambitions to bring appropriate healthcare services closer to where people live, work and shop, while ensuring hospital sites can dedicate space to specialist and acute care.

Patients can continue to book blood test appointments online and access services at the Harvey Centre clinic in Harlow town centre.

A simple visit for a blood test will now no longer cost you an eye watering/rip-off £3.50 to park your car in the Hospital car park. A winner all around :)

Who on earth came up with this idea. I can't think of anything more ridiculous. I dread to think what's coming next.

What's the problem Jean? It frees up hospital space, patients don't have to do the car park search loop for 20 mins, parking is cheaper as Darren says, and you can do your shopping on the same trip. What's not to like?

I am confused about blood tests. I was treated at st Bart’s fore cancer from 2013-2023. I would have to go to st Bart’s for regular blood tests. A couple of times I could not make it so they said I can get my blood tests in harlow which I did. The blood tests in harlow always said my cancer was back, yet when I went to st Bart’s for investigation they did a blood test and said everything was fine. In 2023 I had a routine blood test in harlow which said a had high cholesterol, yet a week later I had my final discharge from st Bart’s where they did blood tests for everything and they said my cholesterol was normal. It seems to me that something is not right with calibration of blood test machines at different locations.

To see Chris Vince grinning at privatisation of phlebotomy services tells you all you need to know about his approach to the NHS and why he is so enthralled by Wes Streeting, the former Health Secretary. By handing the service to Health Services Laboratories the senior management at PAH have undermined the health service union Unison's campaign to raise phlebotomists' pay from Agenda for Change Band 2 to Band 3. This low pay strategy was why PAH and other hospitals found it hard to keep staff. Chris Vince unknowingly shows his true right-wing Blairite beliefs. In other words he is a Red Tory.

Oh dear, a red Tory. Or blue Labour. Maybe a teal Green? Why not just consider the efficacy of outcome?
