Mack the Knife is back in town

HARLOW Theatre Company is opening its doors to some of London’s finest and darkest characters later this month. The Threepenny Opera by Bertolt Brecht is a vivid and dark political commentary on a capitalist London society, described as ‘a play with songs’ the production features the infamous ‘Mack the Knife’.

Set in London, but not quite as we know it, the city is preparing for the Coronation of King Charles III. The parasitic Peachums are battling for power with Police Commissioner Tiger Brown, only their daughter didn’t come home last night, and Mack the Knife is back in town.

The production brings together a new creative team for the company, and marks the directorial debut for Mel Guest, who has been performing on stage locally for nearly 30 years. “The Threepenny Opera presents a very big challenge” Mel said. “It’s an incredibly complex show and places a lot of demand on both the creative team and the cast. We have tried to keep true to Brecht’s intentions of wanting theatre to make you think about the world and society you live in and bring to life the colourful characters that surround us daily.

I’m grateful to be supported by a very experienced team and a very hardworking and talented cast – some of whom currently work professionally. Joe Bishop, taking on the challenge of our leading man, Macheath, tours internationally as a professional dancer and Michelle Jimenez-Alder, playing one of Macheath’s many lovers Low-Dive Jenny, has previously performed at the Royal Opera House. It’s certainly shaping up to be a show not to miss!”.

The Threepenny Opera is running at The Victoria Hall Theatre in Old Harlow from 18-21 July. Tickets are available at https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/harlowtheatrecompany
