Nicoles’s Blog: Going back to work, crime and a neighbour’s 81st birthday

Friday 1st May
DAY 39 of lockdown. Today is the first day of May, a whole month of lockdown. However, today I received some news that’s going to change my pattern of waking up, eating, college work, eating and sleeping everyday. I got a call saying that a Five Guys, which is my place of work, is opening up again on the 6th May, which I don’t really understand because the rules haven’t changed or relaxed at all, and I would’ve thought food places would be the last place to open. However, I’m not complaining though. Believe it or not I’m actually quite excited to go back to work. It’s been quite hard this month, with the whole family being key workers, I’ve been left alone quite a lot, and while they all get to see regular faces of their colleagues and customers everyday I see no one. So I guess I am quite excited to go back.
Another good outcome of this news would be that it’ll help with my online shopping spree. I am ashamed to admit I have been non-stop online shopping with clothes, but it’s pretty hard to resist when your favourite clothes store is doing a massive and very rare sale. I can’t say I regret any of my choices in clothes I’ve bought over the month, well, except today. I received the first item of clothing that was mean to to be an oversized shirt/dress type thing but was really just a box looking sheet that just kind of hung off my body. Nothing like what it looked like on the internet. So after returning that I have definitely learnt my lesson and decided to knock the online shopping on the head for a bit.
My college work is going okay I suppose, I found out that our final major project isn’t actually being graded, so that’s decreased my motivation somewhat, but I’m still trying my best to put all my effort into it 100%, even if it’s not being rewarded whatsoever, I’ll feel good myself knowing I’ve done it.
Tomorrow I have to walk over to Asda to drop off my returns, and try not to buy any snacks, as my weight loss quarantine plan has been going very well so far, and I plan to keep it that way. But that’s what I say all the time.
Saturday 2nd May
Today the news has changed about me going back to work. Instead of the 6th it is now the 7th of May. I suppose this is better even though it’s only one day difference, but it gives me that extra day of preparing to go back into work. I managed to return my clothes at Asda, the queue was massive, however there was a lot more people up town without the necessary precautions like face masks and social distancing. I’ve noticed that the longer lockdown goes on for, the more people are becoming relaxed about the whole situation, as we can clearly see the general public can’t do a simple task and do as they’re told, and just stay inside. However, there has been some good news about lockdown.
Boris Johnson has announced that we have moved past the peak of Covid 19 and they are planning to discuss a 3 point plan to exit lockdown this week. This is probably the best news I’ve heard over the course of 2 months. Although exiting lockdown will take a lot longer than we all might anticipate, at least everyday is another day closer to things returning back to normal.
My best friend and I keep saying we will FaceTime each other over the weeks but we never do, because college is literally unloading so much work onto us, it takes up most of our day, and by the time we’re finished we’re both so exhausted we end up taking a nap and leave it until the next day, and the cycle is never ending. I can’t imagine what it’ll be like when I start work again. Tomorrow I plan to do absolutely nothing, Sunday is a rest day in my eyes, but I’m sure my parents will find something for me to do.
Sunday 2nd May
So I got my new work timetable for this week and I must say, although I’m excited to be seeing people again and doing something productive, I’m not looking forward to the hours. Over Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, I am doing a total of 31 hours. Doesn’t that sound fun? Think of the money, think of the money. I’m still shocked that we’re opening again, but I suppose there’s only so long that a business can stay closed for. Today some shocking news was spread around Harlow, someone was stabbed today in Harlow town. The upsetting thing is that the ambulance and NHS could be helping all these sick patients, helping this country fight the virus, risking their own lives, but they have to take people out to save someone’s life because of the actions of another person.
Nobody has any idea what happened, who the victim was, who the accuser was. It’s all been kept very quiet. I only know this because my brother saw it on his way to work, he walked past the victim on the floor, surrounded by police, ambulance, helicopters flying everywhere. Harlow is a place that is usually full with crime, and with the whole lockdown situation it has decreased a good amount, but we all knew that wasn’t going to last forever.
On some lighter events that happened today, one of my neighbours had her 81st birthday today, but was unfortunately spending it alone. So my next door neighbour organised this small gathering outside her house, where I think around 6 families, including mine, stood outside her door and sang happy birthday to her, keeping social distance of course. One of them had a guitar, people brought gifts and cakes to her door. It was a really sweet and quite an emotional moment, it just shows the importance of community and people during tough times like these, especially for the elderly. I hope all people can recognise this importance and be able to come together, this was honestly the highlight of my day, if not my whole week.
