Local residents invited to help shape new Arts Council-funded musical coming to Harlow

Entertainment / Sat 27th Jun 2026 at 10:38am

PEOPLE aged 16+ in Harlow are being invited to take part in a free creative workshop that will directly influence the development of Fairlight, a new electro-pop musical exploring queer invisibility in men’s tennis that’s touring the UK, including a stop at Harlow Tennis Club.

Fairlight combines live tennis, original music, spoken word and interviews with professional tennis players to tell a powerful story of identity, belonging and the hidden histories of LGBTQ+ athletes in sport.

As part of its Arts Council England-funded UK tour, the creative team is running free community workshops in each tour location, giving local people the opportunity to share their experiences and contribute creatively to the production.

The Harlow workshop will take place on:

Monday 20th July
4.00pm – 7.00pm
Harlow Playhouse

Led by the show’s Creative Director, Alex, the workshop is a relaxed, non-performance session exploring themes of identity, inclusion, exclusion and belonging. Participants can contribute through discussion or creative responses such as poetry, drawing, music or writing. Material and insights from the session will be incorporated into the Harlow performance of Fairlight.

The workshop is open to everyone aged 16+, with a particular welcome extended to members of the LGBTQ+ community, allies, and anyone with lived experience of social exclusion. No creative experience is necessary.

All participants will receive a free ticket to attend the Harlow performance of Fairlight.

Jenny, Producer of Fairlight, said:
“Community voices are at the heart of this project. We want each performance to reflect the place we’re visiting, and we’re really looking forward to hearing from people in Harlow. Whether you love theatre or have never stepped into a workshop before, we’d love you to come along and be part of shaping the show.”
