“Universal Credit must not be cut” says Labour Council Leader

THE Labour Party today brought an Opposition Day motion opposing cuts to Universal Credit.

Despite the hardship so many are already facing, the Conservatives failed to support this motion after they whipped their MPs to abstain claims cllr Ingall.

Harlow Council Leader, Mark Ingall, said: “It is deeply shameful that the Government is planning to cut the lifeline that so many rely on.

The UK has had the worst recession of any major economy on the Conservatives’ watch – now they are forcing families to pay the price.

“Across Harlow, 11,281 people stand to lose out. Protecting families should be at the forefront of the Government’s response, but today they have been abandoned.

“I must pay credit to Robert Halfon, who did the right thing and voted with the Labour Party to oppose his own party’s cut.

But he is one of just a handful of Conservative MPs to do this. Meanwhile, other MPs in his party called it a ‘stunt’.

I don’t think standing up for struggling families is a ‘stunt’ – and I don’t think most people in Harlow would either.

“It is clear from the vote today which party is on the side of families across Britain and which party is not.”
