Black Thursday for Harlow residents as energy bills rocket by £693 as Chancellor unveils £9 bn package of council tax rebates

HARLOW residents face a Black Thursday today with energy bills and mortgage rates set to soar as inflation heads for a 30-year high while Rishi Sunak finally unveiled a £9billion cost-of-living crisis package but admitted it will hardly make a dent in the pain for families reports the Daily Mail.

The Chancellor announced new help in the Commons minutes after it was revealed the energy price cap is going up 54 per cent for millions of people in April, meaning typical costs will rise £693 to £1,971.

And as he spoke, the Bank of England pushed interest rates to 0.5 per cent to control rampant inflation, which it now believes will reach 7.25 per cent in April and act like a lead weight on the economy, as well as pushing up unemployment.

Mr Sunak said A-D band homes will get £150 council tax rebates, while £200 government-backed discounts will help temporarily keep electricity bills lower for everyone – but must be repaid over five years.

There will also be a £150million ‘discretionary fund’ for local authorities to distribute to worse-off families.

But Mr Sunak conceded it would be ‘wrong and dishonest’ to claim that he can take away all the pain, pointing to soaring global gas costs.

He said the ‘vast majority’ of households would see a £350 benefit – but that is less than half the average energy cap increase.

Without Government action, this could be incredibly tough for millions of hardworking families. So the Government is going to step in to directly help people manage those extra costs,’ Mr Sunak said.

The policy has been delayed by weeks of internal wrangling with Boris Johnson and the Cabinet, after many ministers pushed for the £12billion national insurance raid to be delayed or axed.

Mr Sunak said: ‘We are delivering that support in three different ways. First we will spread the worst of the extra costs of this year’s energy price shock over time. This year all domestic electricity customers will receive an up front discount on their bills worth £200.

‘Energy suppliers will apply the discount on people’s bills from October with the Government meeting the cost in full, that discount will automatically be repaid from people’s bills in equal £40 instalments over the next five years.’

Privatisation of the energy utilities and National Grid has been a disaster. The pushback against nuclear power by environmental lobbyists has not helped in reducing our reliance on gas. Also, nuclear reactors do not come in just one flavour as research could have been stepped up on Liquid Fluoride Thorium Reactors (LFTR) which cannot melt down and thus safer than fast breeder reactors. Likewise, I remember a BBC Tomorrow's World programme from the mid-1970s that demonstrated a prototype tidal barrage generator which could be built across the Severn River estuary. Where has wave power gone? Reliance on wind is okay when the wind blows and scientists have recently discovered up to 15% slowing down in wind speeds in parts of Europe. UK-based power company SSE stated that its renewable assets produced 32% less power than expected. Energy policy has been disjointed and radical solutions kicked down the road so now we pay the price for vacillation. https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2021/10/europe-low-winds-future-energy-grid-power

Les Dawson said his mother-in-law made one sack of coal last all through the winter.. When she was cold she put it on her shoulder and ran up and down the stairs. Might be worth a try.

How about suspending the green tax we pay. I believe that’s about 25% and how about lowering the actual tax on fuel

I have no idea where the myth of "25% green tax" comes from. It's not a tax, it is "policy". The Torygraph reports it to be 8% : https://www.telegraph.co.uk/money/consumer-affairs/how-avoid-paying-new-green-tax-energy-bill-2022-uk/ What the Torygraph reports as "environmental and social obligation costs", OfGem report as "Policy". Want it remove? Petition this government to change it's policy.

I cannot understand that people who do not pay council tax can qualify for a rebate. How can you get money back for something you do not pay. The economics of madness !

Jawad you don't have to move supplier , it will automatically appear in April onwards as a £200 credit on individual energy accounts then paid back interest free over 5 years at £40 a year starting in 2023

I don't want a loan, I do not want to owe any one. This helps people in one hand, then down the line in paying back, people will find difficult. So not helping.
