Harlow MP raises issue of energy prices following Russian invasion Ukraine

News / Thu 24th Feb 2022 at 10:40am

HARLOW’S MP, Robert Halfon raised the soaring energy prices with the Prime Minister – citing the Russian invasion as a major cause of the price spike.

In the House of Commons on Tuesday, Mr Halfon said: “I strongly support the Government’s approach. As my hon. Friend the Member for Lichfield said, this is not a faraway country of which we know nothing. However, may I ask what assessment the Government have made of the impact of the war on energy prices and oil prices, and the subsequent impact on people at home? What measures can they introduce to mitigate those factors, given that, as we know, the war is likely to increase the cost of living for ordinary folk throughout the country?”

The Prime Minister responded by saying: “My right hon. Friend is right: one of the risks of Putin’s venture is that there could be a spike in gas and oil prices. We in the Government will do everything we can to mitigate that and to help the people of this country, but it is one of the reasons why the whole of western Europe must end its dependence on Russian oil and gas.”

The Government announced a package of support to help residents with the cost of living in early February which residents can read about here: https://www.yourharlow.com/2022/02/07/mp-robert-halfon-presses-chancellor-rushi-sunak-on-package-of-support-to-help-with-increasing-bills/

Mr Halfon will be making a further statement on the invasion of Ukraine later today (Thursday).

Wholesale crude oil prices until this latest skirmish were far lower than that in 2014 , and now are the same as 2014 , yet the forecourt price continues to be far higher. The oil retailers such as the supermarkets are making a huge profit on the sale of petrol and diesel.

All the more reason to development our own sustainable hydrogen economy.

Having to rely on fossil fuels is the result of a failure to grasp the nettle of hydrogen, nuclear and wave power. Wind turbines are producing around 30% less energy due to reduced wind speeds.across Europe and the UK. Privatisation of the state energy companies and National Grid has not delivered a coherent energy policy.
