HARLOW MP Robert Halfon has issued a further statement on the war in Ukraine.
Mr Halfon said: “Whilst it is absolutely heartbreaking to see what is happening in Ukraine, it is truly incredible to see the courage of the Ukrainian people thwarting the Russian tanks.
“The escalation by Putin in terms of placing his nuclear weapons on ‘special alert’ is alarming, but it only strengthens the unity of the countries in the west and hardens their resolve.
“I strongly welcome the extra sanctions that the Prime Minister and other nations have placed upon Russia and their economy. I especially welcome the aid of £140 million humanitarian aid as well as the extraordinary military aid to Ukraine.
“With regard to visas for those fleeing the country, I believe that we need to be as compassionate as possible and I’m pleased the Prime Minister said that “of course we’re going to take refugees” and that the UK “will help people fleeing in fear of their lives”. I understand that the Home Secretary will be making a statement today on this matter.
“It is also important to note that those fleeing Ukraine are entering safe bordering countries such as Poland – which is extremely welcome.
“Whilst we must be absolutely compassionate, we must also make sure we have the correct financial, housing, health, education resources available for those who come to the UK. With this in mind, I hope that the Government establishes something similar to the Afghan or Hong Kong resettlement scheme.
“I will continue to do everything possible to help any Harlow resident in Ukraine or with family in Ukraine. I know that I speak for our whole town when I say that we stand with Ukraine.”
The West could enforce a no fly zone, or give the Ukrainian pilots the aircraft as suggested in recent days whilst turning off the Russian gas tap.
Wasn't a tory response to offer Ukrainians entry to work as fruit pickers?
Send them planes, ground to air missiles and anti tank missiles to destroy the convoys. Need weapons for close combat fighting: Molotov cocktails are ok but do not inflict enough lethal casualties. Flamethrowers and nail bombs can instil fear and inflict horrendous injuries on the invaders. We need to equip them for street fighting where the defender has advantage. The violators need to suffer for their aggression.
All very well opening our doors to Ukrainians and Afghans and every other people that this 'tough on immigration' Conservative government seems keen to bring in, but what are you doing to improve the infrastructure to cope with it? Housing, medical services, public transport, schools and every other service that these extra people are going to use?
We must help bolster Ukraine’s ability to resist. They need air power to attack and destroy the advancing Russian armoured columns. Send their Air Force planes now with plenty of fire power. They need to be able to hit Russian artillery bases that are firing indiscriminately at civilian targets.
What they need to do is make it easy for the Russian soldiers to surrender. I'm sure a lot of them there don't want to fight. Put messages out on the Internet to tell them that they'll be treated well if they surrender.
If they do not throw down their arms and surrender then they must be annihilated. No mercy to these barbaric violators of Ukraine. We need to help prepare and arm them for guerrilla warfare, which will come about if the Ukrainian military is defeated in combat. Putin will be sucked into a bloody quagmire for years as the Soviets were in Afganistán in the 1980s. A country of over 40 million people and of considerable size will prove virtually impossible to dominate. We need to send Ukraine weapons for urban warfare to instil terror and inflict horrendous casualties on the invader. May God save Ukraine.
