Harlow Councillors secure Commonside Road speeding action

Communities / Wed 23rd Mar 2022 at 06:35am

CONSERVATIVE Councillors representing Harlow’s southern wards have secured a commitment from Essex County Council to do more to tackle speeding on Commonside Road, including a review of traffic calming measures on the road.

This comes after the issue was raised at Harlow Council’s Highways Panel meeting (Tuesday, 22 March 2022) by recently-elected Harlow Common’s Cllr James Leppard and Cllr Alastair Gunn from Staple Tye ward, who have teamed up to work together on the issue.

At the meeting, a representative of Essex County Council’s Highways confirmed that following the completion of a speed survey of the road, a review of the traffic calming measures would take place.

It came after the pair met with residents from both wards concerned about poor road safety, and who expressed their frustration at a lack of action.

Cllr Leppard explained, “Harlow Common residents have been asking for this to be properly looked at for a long time, and I’ve been pushing for quick action.

“The speed bumps near Clifton Hatch in particular are in dire need of improvement. I am pleased Essex Highways have recognised they are not fit for purpose and that they will be replaced.”

Cllr Gunn added, “It is reassuring to know that we’ve secured a review of traffic calming measures, along the whole road.

For residents of places like Latton Green and Monksbury that join Commonside, speeding is one of their major concerns. Anyone who has turned out of the Tysea Road junction will be aware of the danger the small minority of drivers who choose to speed are causing for others.”

Also at the meeting was long-standing Staple Tye and Essex County Councillor Cllr Mike Hardware, who has been campaigning on speeding on Commonside Road for several years.

He said, “I first raised the problem of speeding on Commonside Road four years ago, and secured the recent speed survey of the road. It is excellent to see that traffic calming measures are going to be reviewed and improved.

“I’ve been pleased to work with fellow Conservative Councillors to finally make real progress on this issue, and deliver for the many residents who want to see road safety improved in the area.”

It's great that things are going to be put in place, but will they maintain them after as all the rest of the humps are in dia condition and need sorting

This is good news. We have been asking for this for years. It is very dangerous patch. The last administration just ignored our pleas even though one of their councillors Tony Durcan lives on this very stretch of Commonside Road. He never lifted a finger. This new administration is listening to residents and getting things done.

Dear Kevin, I and Councillor Gunn have engaged with residents and pressed hard for measures to be taken to ease the very real traffic concerns along Commonside Road, crossing both our wards. County Councillor, Mike Hardware has ensured that this has been brought to the attention of Essex County Council. I can assure that we will be monitoring progress and ongoing maintenance, something which was not done in the past.

Not sure who Judy is but am sure the record will show that with Maggie Hulcoops help we got the current system restarted.as the flashing signs had been turned off as reported in your Harlow. Perhaps you need to check your facts before accusing others. The local residents and schools have been complaining to the Tory county council for years. Let be clear all they are offering is a survey not a solution. The traffic survey was conducted only a few week ago. The last campaign resulted in large 30 signs being painted on the road as recommended by the Tory council. This should not be political but community. Such a shame that the Tories want to make pathetic point scoring. Safety first.

Cllr Durcan, I can assure you that I have a collaborative relationship with Cllr Maggie Hulcoop and Cllr Wilkinson on resident/community issues as I think is appropriate. On the question of taking direct action and initiative on Commonside Road, this has largely been driven by Cllr Gunn when he was Portfolio holder for Environment. I have kept the two Labour ward councillors updated.

Promising news! I live along this section of road between Rundells and Latton Green and have made Mike Hardware and the relevant authorities aware numerous times of the speeding and accidents along this road (at least a couple per year on just this small 200m section). Myself and another resident also managed to get over 1000 signatures on a petition to do something about traffic calming, hopefully we will now see some action!

After nearly 2 years and a lot of emails backwards and forwards nothing has been done. Unfortunately nothing more than I expected.

The road is dangerous no markings and cars speeding as if it's a race track. Just put a police person with a camera for a couple of weeks also perment cameras
