Robert Halfon MP responds after PM Boris Johnson wins vote of no confidence

News / Mon 6th Jun 2022 at 08:42pm

PRIME Minister Boris Johnson has won a vote of confidence of Tory MPs by 211 to 148.

It means he will stay in his job as prime minister.

The result was announced by chairman of the 1922 Committee Sir Graham Brady.

Boris Johnson has received 58.8% of support from the Conservative Party, with 41.2% voting against his leadership.

Every single Conservative MP voted.

This result is lower than the 63% received by Theresa May during her leadership challenge in 2018.

Harlow MP Robert Halfon has responded to the result. Earlier, he confirmed that he supported the Prime Minister.

Mr Halfon said: “My position has not changed from my previous statement. I remain disgusted at the revelations from the Sue Gray inquiry about what has gone on in Downing Street.

“However, after weeks of soul-searching, I must balance recent events against the priorities of my residents in Harlow. I am contacted every day by constituents who are facing extraordinary struggles with the cost of living. Just last week, I met a constituent who is facing the closure of their shop because they are struggling with the rising bills which has risen by £12,000 this year. It is in tackling these challenges that the Government must be focussed.

“A leadership election would distract us all for many weeks in the midst of a triple whammy of critical issues including dealing with the aftermath of the pandemic, a cost of living crisis, and the war in Ukraine. The priority must, must, must be to help people substantially deal with the cost of living. As such, I will not be voting to change the Prime Minister at this time.

”That said, it is my hope that this moment presents a unique opportunity for the Prime Minister and the Government to demonstrate they have listened to the concerns of colleagues and the public in terms of a step-change of governance in Number 10. In order to regain people’s trust and support, Boris Johnson must deliver for the people of Harlow, and across the country.”

Half on has not listened to the people of Harlow at all. He is so disgusted that he supports a poor leader who has no respect for the law and no plan or interest in dealing with the cost of living crisis. Therefore as half on will not get rid of the PM, we look forward to getting rid of him when the chance comes.

Halfons support of Boris is a disgrace .We have a leaderless government and Roberts support of a lame duck PM reminds us all of his promise to get rid of all potholes on Harlow roads..again a deafening silence now. Words but not honesty

So, RH what does it take for you not to support the current PM? Lied to the Queen - RH still supported Boris. Lied about Brexit (will we ever get £350M as week for the NHS?)- RH still supported Boris. Lied about building new hospitals - RH still supported Boris. Lied about "no parties" - RH still supported Boris. Lied about having a social care plan - RH still supported Boris. Haw many more lies and dishonesty will it take for RH to do the right thing?

I wonder what would have happened if the Conservative Party had left Neville Chamberlain in charge during a time of international crisis?

Is there a reshuffle of the Tory frontbench soon? Is Mr. Halfon in the frame? Is that the price for supporting a liar and criminal? Shuffling a bunch of rubbish who do not know most of their brief or understand the problems people are encountering is disgraceful. And Mr. Halfon ignores all that and still keeps a incompetent leader in office. And Starmer just shouts from the sidelines with no radical policy agenda. Indeed he is still shafting his own membership than challenging PM Johnson. Clement Attlee and Nye Bevan must be crying with outrage.

Robert the essence of good management and leadership is addressing the problem and taking the necessary action; not sidelining it or abdicating responsibility in the forelorn hope it will go away. The fact that Johnson clings to powee like a ego driven sixth dormer demonstrates clearly he is not fit for office.

After weeks of soul searching I must balance recent events against the expectation of good honest statesmanship and find that personal interests remain paramount. Sorry Robert, but you've just lost another vote when the time comes

I keep writing to Robert Halfon. Thinking he seems concerned. But yet again he’s shown his utter contempt for me and for every other Harlow resident. I’ll stop writing now. There is no point when he just clings on the the line his peers are clinging onto. Roll on the next election.

I am disgusted with Robert Halfons’ support of Boris Johnson. How could he say he ‘has confidence’ in our lying, cheating, joke of a prime minister? His response to my email asking him to listen to his constituents, and vote no confidence implied that this wasn’t a good time to have a leadership election due to the issues we are facing currently…what rubbish - now is the right time before anymore damage is done to our country by this poor excuse of a prime minister. I would never have thought that our proud country would EVER accept and tolerate a Prime Minister so dishonest, that he has been been investigated and found guilty by our own police force and an independent enquiry. Yet still he admits no shame..all we get is excuses…and by showing your support, I can promise you Mr Halfon that you will never have my vote.

I see the anti-Boris Left are up in arms & trying to rubbish a decent MP. That's about all they know how to do.

So Mr Halfon it seem to me as long as you apologise profusely it makes what you did ok, does that mean all those people in prison, who really did not know they where doing wrong and have apologised should be set free, with no consequences? Apologise all you like it still makes the one person who knows what the law is and right from wrong a liar and cheat who does not deserve your backing and will never get my vote.

Sonia Purnell, Boris Johnson's biographer, tells BBC Scotland’s Lunchtime Live why Partygate has not gone away. “My mother was in a care home, I thought she was safe. She went into lockdown before the rest of us and I thought 'well that’s good, she’ll be protected'. “But they sent out people from hospital who had Covid, they were untested. At least one was put on her floor in the care home. “And everyone on her floor died, including my mother. I was informed by e-mail. “I buried her the day before the Downing Street garden party, and you know there were only 10 of us allowed.” Ms Purnell says it was a “deeply traumatic experience” and she says it is very difficult to come to terms with. “The people who governed us, who we would normally want to rely on as having our best interests at heart, were drinking and vomiting, carrying on in a way that was totally undignified at best, almost callous in its disregard for the rest of us."

Well done Mr Halfon. This mature, balanced view gives me confidence in your judgment. You will have my vote again.

I cannot believe that Robert supports Boris--he supports a man he believes can get us out of the mess the UK is in--I certainly do not believe so--Boris is a populist, a known liar, been fined for Partygate, performed poorly over Covid issues and is therefore responsible for many more deaths than necessary by acting slowly and too late--he led a Cabinet who did not have the experience to deal with it properly, he has made our country a laughing stock internationally-- do I believe Boris's apology ?--no way--perhaps Robert feels there is no-one of suitable integrity in his party to lead our nation through the difficult days ahead--that would be a sad inditement of the current Conservative Party. Sorry Robert--you are a nice man but this is the last straw.

I am so fed up with the looney remoaners trying to oust Boris for eating birthday cake! What about the leader of the opposition having his get together??? He nearly died of covid hisself!! I do not think there is anyway he did not take it seriously!!!!! He got us the vaccine and kept the country going as best he could in lock down with payments of wages!!!! He delivered Brexit something Hunt and May tried to block!!!! Boris may have made mistakes along the way but he is for the people!!! I thoroughly back him and I think the police Should give Starmer his fine now as well as a lot of the others!!! I do not want a person in charge who wants to reverse Brexit and certainly not Starmer!!! He did an incredibly hard task during those 2 years and I appreciate that so much!!! Cost of living will be a problem to who ever is in charge !! It is not an easy problem !! But I do believe he is our best hope and I will vote him the next election and not for any traitor to him!!!! Let him get on with the job!

I have written to RH many times over the past year expressing views on Johnson which are well documented by others a liar, cheat and generally untrustworthy individual without any Leadership or moral qualities. For more than 50 years I had voted Labour but in the last three Elections I cast my vote for RH – not because I was taken with the Conservativem Policy but that I felt RH was a thoroughly decent bloke, Honourable and a good Constituency MP – I am afraid now I have been proved wrong. I expected him to do the decent thing and vote to rid us of Johnson – he has continually “kicked the can down the road” with first the Police Action and then the Sue Gray Report always waiting like Mr. Micawber but when “push came to shove”, he couldn’t sidestep anymore and do the right thing. I am so disappointed in RH as I thought for once I had found decent person in who I could put my trust; maybe I should have known better as after all he is a Politician in the pay of Johnson - or is it just that everything and everyone Johnson touches gets tainted eventually?

The problem is, every one of the named potential candidates who will put their names forward to replace Boris are just as bad if not 100 times worse! Perhaps he'll call a snap election!

Who the hell do those Tory MPs think they are? The electorate voted Boris in. It's only us that should be able to vote him out. They should get back under their rocks - slimy snakes that they are.

Boris hardly 'won' the confidence vote. It was not a leadership election where a majority of one would suffice but a show of confidence in the Prime Minister. That only 60 odd percent of Tory Members voted for him, the very people you might expect to do so is not a ringing endorsement. That Mr Halfon says he does not trust Boris but still voted that he has confidence in him is extraordinary. I imagine many other members also held their noses whilst voting for Boris and that says something about the moral vacuity of Mr Halfon and the Tories.
