Fire rips through three storey townhouse in Purford Green

General / Fri 20th Jan 2023 at 07:34pm

Update: Report from Essex Fire Service

CREWS have issued safety advice following a fire at a mid terraced home in Harlow.

Our Control team were called to reports of a fire in a three-storey property in Purford Green today at 6.09pm.

Two crews from Harlow and one from Epping attended.

Watch Manager Ross Daynes said: “A member of the public gave our Control team a really good description of the fire, including that it had spread to the roof, at which point I requested the third appliance.

“On arrival we found a well-developed fire in a second floor bedroom. Crews worked really hard and did a brilliant job of stopping the fire from spreading to the adjoining rooms and properties.

“The incident shows the importance of keeping doors closed at night if possible, to act as a fire break. The bedroom where the fire started sustained significant damage, but an adjacent room was undamaged because the door was shut.”

Three men were treated for the effects of smoke inhalation.

Crews fully extinguished the fire by 7.14pm. They believe the fire was caused by discarded smoking materials.

Watch Manager Daynes said: “The occupant has discarded his cigarette and went downstairs to the kitchen. When he returned a few minutes later he was faced with a significant fire.

“If you’re a smoker, please make sure your cigarette is fully extinguished, never leave them unattended and never smoke in bed.”

A truly sad end to a fabulous house in a fabulous part of town. Really greatfull no one was hurt even if it was a HMO. Hopefully the rebirth will bring good fortunes back to what is a great family home

Even if it was a HMO? How rude. I’m glad no one was hurt who ever lives there, 6 people lost their home and possibly their belongings. Thank you to all the emergency services to put it out quickly.

Hopefully no one was hurt. We were previously tenants of this very HMO!! I think people assume HMO are all horrible and poor qualiaty etc... this house was a new HMO and was lovely inside. All decked out in brand new furniture and decorated. It's really sad that someone in the house disobed the house rules and didn't go the garden to smoke.

As the property management, why did you not act about the previous behaviour of this individual of which you were aware of. The other tenants and neighbours had been complaining about the individual for some time and even local councillors had tried to get involved. Why does it take a crisis before action is taken. This individual will be re housed to carry on with his chaos, but the neighbours have to live with the trauma and try to get on with their lives as best they can.. the only good thing here, is while some people have mental trauma to deal with,no one was seriously injured, which is purely by chance. Next time everyone may not be so lucky. Maybe you should take complaints about problem tenants more seriously. Sorry if this offends anyone

Theman - that is totally wrong information You obviously have issues with it being a HMO I will not be commenting any further to these allegations that are certainly not true The tenants are great friends in this house and are adamant that they all would like to stay together and are supporting each other

Nothing nice to say, say nothing…irrelevant of it being HMO. These are all young WORKING men, paying their taxes. This was an accident, pure and simple. My son is one of the tenants that was taken to hospital, luckily he is now home. These guys all get on brilliantly and are concerned for their FRIEND that remains unwell and in hospital. They are all friends, no tenant is an issue, no complaints have been made about each other to the agent. The agents were on the scene within 10 minutes of being called to check everyone was safe and well and remained until all safe and in ambulances. This agent goes above and beyond and I couldn’t ask for a better house for my son to live in. Before you write your lies and pass judgement, take a look and check your facts. Get off your keyboards and go help and shove your vile comments where the sun doesn’t shine.

Wonder if this had something to do with the incident at the shark pub

Clearly I have been misinformed by neighbours of this property. Curious why they would hold this opinion if untrue.

Concerned resident what incident then? I was there Friday , Saturday , Sunday and nothing happened... So tell us attention seeker what's gone on?

Sarah

There have always been certain neighbours who opposed it being a HMO .. one of them being a trouble maker even tried to get the council involved! There will always be people oppose HMO as they just make assumptions about it being so and who lives in there. We were all full time workers in that house when we lived there. The freinds in the house will support one another I am sure.
