Plans for new council homes in Arkwrights and The Yorkes move forward

News / Mon 27th Mar 2023 at 02:52pm

HARLOW Council is set to award contracts for the building of 14 more new homes as part of its council housebuilding programme.

Harlow’s cabinet agreed a report tonight (23 March), which will pave the way for the council to appoint contractors to construct 8 three-bedroom council houses at a disused garage site in Arkwrights and 6 one- and-two-bedroom bungalows at The Yorkes in Tye Green.

Both developments, which have been given planning permission, will provide new council homes. All homes will be allocated to Harlow families on the Housing Needs Register.

The homes will be built using the latest energy-saving technology to help deliver low running costs for tenants. The new homes in The Yorkes will be exclusively for over 55s.

Councillor Michael Hardware, cabinet portfolio holder for regeneration and strategic growth, said:

“Moving forward with awarding these contracts will deliver two more council house developments for Harlow families. Our council housebuilding programme will build the right homes in the right places to the highest standards so that we can improve the lives of Harlow families and restore pride in our neighbourhoods by regenerating disused land.”

Construction work on both developments is likely to start in the autumn.

What is the council going to do about parking? If these are former garage sites, then I'd expect them to be currently used as hardstand parking bays. Building houses on them will result in fewer parking spots in what is already a complete sh*tshow.

Car parking is a challenge..Harlow NewTown was designed to have a capacity of 1 car per 7 households. I'm thinking most people would agree that homes are more important than car parking..it's crazy that we now have 2-3 cars per household..it's not Gunpowder science..just look at the state of our grass verges, broken paving, pot holes etc...THIS TOWN WASNT DESIGNED TO HAVE SO MANY CARS... The design was for a well functioning Public transport system combined with a Local employment strategy..( Harlow was never designed to be a commuter town..and it just won't work)

Expand the ULEZ into this town, extend the Overground to the train station and let TFL replace Arriva.

Not sure about ULEZ but I agree with Anon about extending the reach of TfL to Harlow. At least give us Oyster and Contactless...
