Winter fuel allowance ‘risk’ being monitored by Essex hospitals

HOSPITALS in Essex have begun monitoring the number of elderly patients needing treatment because of the cold in response to the cut to the winter fuel allowance for pensioners reports the Local Democracy Reporter.
The winter fuel payment was previously paid to all pensioners to help with energy bills, with the government has scrapped the scheme for all except those on certain benefits.

It has sparked concern from Essex council leaders who have moved to pass resolutions urging the government to reconsider its stance.
At a meeting of the Essex County Council health scrutiny board Sarah Tedford, interim managing director for Broomfield Hospital, said Mid and South Essex NHS trust managers were already discussing potential impacts of the decision.
She said: “I’m not sure we’ll see an impact on discharges but one of the things we have talked about is will there be an impact on admissions.
“If older people are getting cold and not looking after themselves in the winter what might that impact be?
“None of us can estimate that that is something that we are thinking about and aware of the fragility of some of these people older people is such that it doesn’t take much for them to become unwell again.
“I think it’s a risk. It’s not on the risk register but it’s an area that obviously we will monitor If we see admissions increasing above what we would expect.
“That is the sort of thing we will be looking at and trying to understand what happening.
The move also sparked concern from Labour members which formally passed a motion demanding to scrap the decision, which would axe the £300 payment for all but the poorest OAPs.
The U-turn was put forward by Unite – one of Labour’s most powerful union backers and the Communication Workers’ Union (CWU) at the annual Labour Party conference in Liverpool last month.
Unite general secretary Sharon Graham told the conference: “I do not understand how our new Labour government can cut the winter fuel allowance for pensioners and leave the super-rich untouched. This is not what people voted for. It is the wrong decision and needs to be reversed.”
In order to be eligible for a Winter Fuel Payment this year, someone must have been born before September 23, 1958 and claiming one of the following benefits between September 16 and September 22, 2024:
Income Support
Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
Pension Credit
Universal Credit
But for anyone not claiming one of these benefits during the qualifying week, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed there is still a way you can qualify.
Pension credit claims can be backdated by three months, which means they have until December 21 to apply and still be entitled to the Winter Fuel Payment.
Pension Credit tops up weekly income to £218.15, or £332.95 for couples. But as well as giving extra income, it also unlocks other perks such as free dental treatment and vouchers for glasses or contact lenses, or a free TV licence if you’re over the age of 75.
If any Harlow pensioners die from cold this winter, Chris Vince needs to resign in shame.
Silly comment David. Did Robert Halfon resign when his Government cut Disability Benefits and other welfare benefits, which undoubtedly led to people, elderly included, dying? Or when he voted with his Governent for some of the disastrous reforms to the NHS that has resulted in massive waiting lists and delays in patients getting the medical treatment they deserved, and many deaths? Or when hundreds of elderly people died because of his Governments massive mis-handling of care and nursing homes during the pandemic?
Silly response Mike. Halfon should have resigned as well. They are all corrupt in that they're only in it for themselves.
I think we can safely say the political elite have zero interest in the most vulnerable in society. It's always the least capable of causing mass protests that they target. What about targeting the able bodied, healthy and young people who have made a career of living on benefits ... generation after generation ? It feels like all the security nets for those who don't have the good fortune to be wealthy, and no, it's not a choice for most people, are being dismantled. I honestly fear for the way things are going. We all should
I don’t get it. The government spent 500 billion protecting the elderly in the pandemic, yet now they are happy to let the freeze or starve.
Guy, it was less about protecting the elderly, and more about payments to their friends and sponsors. I guess a bit was about protecting their voter base. It’s funny isn’t it - Back in 2019 there was a survey among Conservative Party Members about the cost of Brexit. 61% said they would rather Brexit took place even if it caused significant damage to the UK economy. Just 28% said the opposite. I don’t know how old the average Conservative Party Member is now, but the average age that you ‘become a Tory’ has risen to 63. When these people said that Brexit was more important than the economy, who did they think was going to pay for their folly? Kids education or cancer patients maybe! The average Briton was nearly £2,000 worse off in 2023 as a result of Brexit and there are nearly two million fewer jobs overall in the UK due to Brexit. Fewer jobs means less tax raised and so less money for handouts like the Winter Fuel Payment. Keir Starmer, you should grow a spine and stop talking about this £20bn ‘Tory Black Hole’. The cost of Brexit to the UK’s economy is £140 billion. We voted for Change - We’ve got ‘Under New Management”, but with all the sleaze, centred on you Keir, you may as well hang a ‘Business as Usual’ sign underneath.
I would have thought the Government would not want to be adding to NHS pressures. Unfortunately, Labour have taken a lot of donations from rich business people which helps to explain why those with the broadest shoulders will not be expected to bear the greater sacrifice. Starmer would rather freeze pensioners than upset his freebie gift mates.
When have any of our governments pass or present ever made reductions in their Lucrative expenses & perks ?? We the taxpayers are paying for their heating , council tax amongst many other things. Yet they shamefully Rob our elderly of their heating allowance. Why don't they stop those allowances they are getting if they say the government needs to make savings. Then let's start with all their expenses and benefits. They get a handsome wage. Live off it like the rest of us. They even get Child allowance not for two children like everyone else but for 3 to the value of £6120 per child. Please tell me what makes them so special !! They are the Leeches of our society. I agree with David they are in it for themselves.
What a terrible state of affairs it is that the NHS has to implement special measures to monitor the wellbeing of our elderly because a British government has removed their heating allowance. I am absolutely disgusted by this government and our MP who backed them with his vote. I never thought I would see this from a Labour government. They should all be thoroughly ashamed of themselves.
