Harlow Council leader delighted with progress of new home building across town

News / Wed 4th Dec 2024 at 09:58am

ON FRIDAY morning, we went on a tour of a number of housing developments with the leader of Harlow Council Dan Swords.

It was just a few months ago that the developments at Staple Tye were just begining. In early December, the first two storeys had gone up and they are working at pace.

The council and their partners hope to have these completed by mid-2025.

After visiting the Staple Tye sites, we went over to Lower Meadow, where an innovative development for the homeless is taking shape.

These new homes are to house homeless who are “transitioning” from temporary to permanent accommodation.

We also spoke to the Conservative Councillor for the Latton Bush & Stewards ward, Alastair Gunn He said, “Having pressed for the regeneration of the old garage site in Lower Meadow, after having been left neglected for so long, I’m delighted to see the area brought back into use.

“That the SoloHaus units being built there will help people from Harlow facing homelessness get back on track is brilliant. I cannot thank Hill Group enough for what they are doing here in Harlow and across the country to help tackle homelessness.

“At my insistence, Lower Meadow residents were written to by the Council and Hill Group in detail about what the units will be like, and Hill Group held a day-long engagement event at the Chinese Centre to allow anyone with concerns to ask questions.

“It remains important that local residents continue to be listened to. I’ll be there for them, if they do have any concerns about this project during its construction and once the SoloHaus units are occupied.”

Finally, we went over to the Woodleys off Minchen Road.

This is one of the many new schemes that are at different stages of development across the town.

In the films, you can see, we do once again ask councillor Swords to stress that these are “Harlow homes for Harlow people”.

We also ask him for an update on Millbrook House, off the railway station roundabout.

Finally, we also ask him to stress the importance of “taking the whole town with him”.

We hear the words, indeed we have heard so many that people are asking lets see the results of the bye-line "Harlow Homes for Harlow People". The question is and always has been for me is: How many of these homes are for the people on the council's housing needs register? Cllr Swords answer that question before I predict not many and those that do will be paying market rent values. Smoke and mirrors again from this young man I suspect.

All he's done is show what private companies are doing and most will have little or no social allocations at all. His use of the term "We" is a self imposed suggestion that Harlow council is building homes and it simply is not. False glory is a trick of those who are opportunist's and are comfortable falsehoods.

If it really is homes for harlow people can someone please explain why single people who were born in the town and lived here all their lives have been removed from the housing list and been told that they will not be allowed to re register because they live at home and are said to be adequately housed!! So being born and living in the town all their lives doesn't class them as Harlow people. Dan Swords can you please explain your policy.

But then you got people want to move but there only option is home swap which is wrong I've been having threats from neighbours and they said to me the only option is to mutual exchange why can't it be like back in day if you want a fresh start or just move in to a different area why can't this be a option for tenants

How many of the properties being built are available for council rent? More so called affordable properties or social housing. Affordable for who is the question and as far as social housing is concerned the the nearest thing to that in my mind is a pub. As much as I agree Harlow young adults deserve a home of their own private rentals costing as much as a mortgage which they cannot afford is not the answer. The only answer is council properties.

Dan Swords says regarding the 172 Burnt Mill flats that "people will be moving in the coming weeks" because the "adverts will go out today".

At the Woodleys site Michael Casey asks Dan Swords: "Labour are still quite sceptical, aren't they, they had a recent article about Elm Hatch." Dan Swords replies: "I don't know what there is to be sceptical about." Labour sour grapes that they delivered next to nothing on regeneration.
