Princess Alexandra Hospital bosses respond to government announcement on new hospital

General / Tue 21st Jan 2025 at 06:19pm

YESTERDAY’S announcement (20 January) is a significant delay to the original plans for a new Princess Alexandra Hospital (PAH), but it does provide “certainty” that there will be a new hospital during the next decade.

This afternoon, we went down to Princess Alexandra Hospital, to interview the Director of Estates and Strategy, Michael Meredith regarding the government announcement that the building of a new hospital would start between 2032 and 2034.

Mr Meredith and his colleagues were calling it good news. Harlow MP Chris Vince was calling it good news but we wanted to reflect the frustration of our readers, who had seen promise after promise and starting date after starting date.

We asked Mr Meredith to define good news as well as asking him about their business plan and our annual question of whether they had bought the land yet?

We still appear to be looking at the area off Junction 7a of the M11.

Hattie Llewelyn-Davies, chair of PAHT, and Thom Lafferty, chief executive at PAHT added their comments.

They said: “We are pleased that the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, the Rt Hon Wes Streeting, has confirmed the government’s commitment to a new hospital for Harlow. His statement provides much-needed certainty to our people and our patients.

“The new hospital will provide an incredible opportunity to transform the care we deliver to our local populations, responding to local need.

“In the meantime, our ageing hospital estate continues to face significant and ongoing problems. Now that the start of construction for our new hospital has been delayed until 2032, we will work with system and NHS England colleagues to ensure we can maintain safe and effective facilities for our patients and staff across our current sites in the meantime.

“We would like to thank our people, our patients, our partners, and our local communities for their continued support.”

We will publish a separate news item on the “ageing estate” on Wednesday.

I’ve only got one comment, what happens when the 4000 homes at Gilston, come on line? Because that will certainly occur, long before a new hospital is started, this is very short sighted Mr. Streeting.

It is with some irony that Labour/Wes Streeting and Chris Vince all took pot shots at the tories claiming the kicked the can down the road on a new harlow hospital, only for all of them to kick the same can, down the same road with a pledge (not a promise), to start possibly in 2032

Apparently he said on the news that the hospital will attract a higher quality staff, kick in the teeth for the overworked short staffed people there at the moment in appalling conditions, some staff have no access to drinking water, staff toilets are worse than the Glastonbury long drops, working long hours unpaid as they care, as service users themselves, yet the execs don’t even use the hospital and always fully staffed! Maybe the new hospital will attract a higher quality of execs too?

I agree Sarah. What came of that interview is a lack of acknowledgement of the hard work ALL staff do at the hospital in appalling conditions. The staff toilets are disgusting, the lack of available drinking water is criminal and to insult the staff by Michael Meredith saying he is looking forward to attracting quality staff is a real kick in the teeth. IF this hospital ever happens I will jump on a cow and fly over the moon

Funny how quick all the new houses go up but a very needed hospital takes 10 years 😡

More platitudes from the hospital management team who should be disappointed rather than pleased. This is the same management team that has created more chaos into the day to day running of the hospital by introducing a new IT system before staff were properly trained on how to use it.

It's the same management team that's now massaging the waiting lists by persuading those in deep pain who have reached the top of extremely long waiting lists for elective surgery to transfer to other hospitals outside of the area with false promises of faster treatment. It turns out that these patients then find they have joined the bottom of another waiting list. Absolute disgrace.

I think it’s shocking that after all this time and promises Harlow has to wait even more years, totally shocking. As far as attracting better staff after that remark they will be lucky if they don’t all go on strike . The staff work in exceptional circumstances and mostly terrible conditions, they deserve a very big pay on the back and thank you .

Why do people expect a hospital to be built quicker than a few houses? Are we from Harlow that stupid? This is great, finally after the Tory government's failure to commit - we have a timeline!

The Terms and Conditions within the new hospital programme Gov.Uk.press release says: "Delivery expectations may be subject to change depending on local and national factors and the programme reserves the right to adjust the delivery plan as schemes develop in the future." A get of jail free card.
