Harlow MP writes to boss of Virgin Media after thousands of residents left without service

Business / Wed 12th Feb 2025 at 07:49am

THE MP for Harlow has written to the Chief Executive Officer of Virgin Media after thousands of his constituents were left without a service on Monday and Tuesday.

Mr Vinces’s letter is below.

Dear Lutz Schüler,

I am writing to you today following reports of poor service from Virgin Media in my constituency of Harlow.

Yesterday, thousands of Virgin Media users in the Eastern part of Harlow were left without internet, television and other sources due to a fault. This outage lasted the majority of the day.

Furthermore, there has been allegations of continuing issues, with my constituent’s stating that Virgin Media’s broadband reliability has been deteriorating now for several years.

In the era of remote working, reliable Wi-Fi is an essential, helping to shape the backbone of productivity and communication.

In addition, landline phones remain a crucial lifeline for vulnerable individuals, particularly the elderly. For those who are vulnerable and without mobile phones, landlines are meant to offer a consistent and stable means of communication, which is vital in the event of an emergency.

I would be most grateful if the outlined concerns could be investigated without further delay.

I look forward to your response.

Yours sincerely,

Chris Vince

Mr Vince, long service outages are investigated as a matter of routine. Given the number of customers affected it was sure to have been escalated to very senior management. Virgin Media, like all other telecoms companies, have escalation and major event learning procedures in place. I know this as a former duty manager at VMs network management centre. It does not need Mr Vince to write a letter, but does allow him to feel relevant.

Landlines are being turned off by the government in 2027. I am sure this is just an oversight by Mr Vince no MP worth his salt would be unaware of gov plans.

I think Mr Vince is right to write this sort of letter. People would all be complaining that Mr Vince doesn't care about representing his constituency. Virgin and other providers have long gotten away with poor service. Where is the compensation to the users when we pay good money to Virgin for a service they are not providing. They would soon be after you if didn't pay your bill. If they don't provide the service they should compensate us.

We contacted virgin and all we got it's your equipment. Had to book an engineer and cost us £25, if engineer turned up luckily service was back and running next day. Virgin services suck.

I went almost 24 hours without the internet which is vital for me. After a telephone call lasting almost ¾ of hour I was told it was my equipment & the earliest an engineer could come was Wednesday & would be given a call Tuesday morning to get things started never happened. Good job I phoned back & canceled the engineer otherwise I was going to be charged £25 for nothing. Considering I'm on the priority list exceptionally disappointing service from virgin

Where was Mr Vince, when they voted to rob the vulnerable old people of thier winter fuel allowance, he voted to take it away, didn't care much then about. Vulnerable people, just jumping on a non issue. Roll on the next general election.

Mr. MP write against the outrageous hike these telecom companies put on the customers in-between the contract term saying "inflation excesses". That would be appreciated!

Nice to hear that the Labour M. P is getting involved in a non event. You still have your mobile data to use, and put an aireal lead in the back of your TV and plug it in.
