Dispersal Order in place across Harlow to protect public from car cruise event

News / Fri 28th Feb 2025 at 06:40pm

A FURTHER dispersal order is being put in place as we extend our work to protect the public from a potential car cruise event.

The dispersal order for Harlow is covering an area including River Way, Church Langley, Old Harlow, Harlow town centre, and Gilden Way.

It will be in place from 6pm today (Friday 28 February) and 6am tomorrow (Saturday 1 February).

Inspector Tony Short said: “We believe this unauthorised event is planned to take place in Harlow and we’re taking pre-emptive steps to keep the public safe.

“While we know there are many responsible and respectful drivers who attend, we also know there is a history of dangerous and anti-social driving connected to them.

“We cannot tolerate behaviour that puts the safety of the public at risk or the disruption they cause to residents and businesses.

“This order gives our officers the power to direct people acting anti-socially to leave the area or face arrest.”

There are similar orders in place in Braintree and Southend.

“We cannot tolerate behaviour that puts the safety of the public at risk or the disruption they cause to residents and businesses" On the face of it a fair enough comment. But, usng that logic many professional football matches should be banned due to crowd behaviour. Is there really nothing that can be done to help these guys enjoy themselves safely?

Good point from Peter re football event and crowd control. I don't believe giving these enthusiasts a place would make a difference, but worth trying to find somewhere and charging them entry. Jay and Martin, you try being tired from a full on week of work and family commitments to then not being able to sleep because of the noise AND trying to settle the kids back to sleep!

Yes, there are things that could be done, that allows these guys to enjoy themselves, but it costs money, money which the organiser's either haven’t got, or not prepared to spend. It could be held off the public highway at North Weald Airfield, for example and have proper crowd control measures in place, to prevent a repeat of the serious incident 5 years ago in Stevenage, where 17 spectators were injured, after 2 speeding cars collided and ended going into the watching crowd. Also who pays for the damaged road surface after the cars doing doughnuts and high speed wheel spins, it’s certainly not the organisers but the council tax payers. Not to mention the disruption and delays to emergency vehicles being unable to quickly attend incidents with so many roads be suddenly blocked off by these unofficial events.

Why the need to do this we had custom cars in my youth 70s and 80s and we did not have the need to do this I remember the cars were better then now we customised properly not just a loud engine and stereo and a wrap for a paint job then the need to show off have a proper organised meet
