Harlow MP Chris Vince questions Deputy Prime Minister on housing

HARLOW MP Chris Vince rose on the floor of the House of Commons to question the deputy prime minister on housing.

Chris Vince said: “The Deputy Prime Minister is giving an excellent speech about the importance of building homes.
She mentioned the importance of getting young people out of temporary accommodation, which I wholly support.
Does she agree that it is not just about temporary accommodation but about families who are suffering from overcrowding, families in unsuitable accommodation and families at risk of homelessness, with the anxiety that brings? My inbox is full of that from residents in Harlow.
Deputy Prime Minister,Anglea Rayner replied:
“My hon. Friend makes an important point. Not only have the Government inherited a really dire house building situation—we will turn the tide and build 1.5 million homes—but we have seen homelessness levels rise. The previous Government promised to end section 21 no-fault evictions but did not; we are going to do it. We will also bring in Awaab’s law, which will protect people in the rented sector. There is so much wrong with our housing system. The Government are starting to turn the tide on that. This Bill is one crucial step in the overall picture of what we are doing to improve circumstances for people, whether they want to buy a home, whether they are in a home or whether they are in privately rented accommodation.
“I turn back to the planning committees. We will bring in new controls over the size of planning committees, increasing the pace and quality of decision making while maintaining robust debate. We are introducing mandatory training for planning committee members to improve their expertise while allowing councils to set their own planning fees to cover their costs, with a promise that that money will be reinvested in the system to help speed it up
.
I do laugh when I see such things. Neither Mr Charisma or Crayons build anything, let alone 1.5 million homes. Even when they claim 1.5 million homes they continually refuse or leave out, how much of that housing will be affordable housing. Nor do they mention stopping council house sales till they sell one, build one. Something Labour attacked the tories for in opposition but now in government, they seem to have developed a brain fog on council/social housing discount sales. The government does not build homes. The obvious answer would be to block all new estate building and only approve house building that will be used for social housing. Sure the building companies will kick and scream at first but it wouldn't take long before they turned around. Who would pay for it? As we've seen with desperate dan the digger man, councils can find money down the back of the sofa when it's for their own pet projects. Also on Private developments, I'd place a 10% levy in advance, that goes into a social housing/council houses ring fenced fund. I say ring fenced because most of those in power change words and demands to gain access to funds they were never supposed to touch other than for one specific purpose. Lastly, I'd make every build fully transparent including costs, not something Harlow council is doing right now despite being legally obliged too.
Another uninspiring question from Mr Vince to get his name in the press. The only interesting and probably true comment from Angela Rayner is ending "section 21 no-fault evictions".
