Harlow Conservative councillor supports call for £70 million cash injection for Princess Alexandra Hospital

Health / Tue 20th May 2025 at 07:06pm

COUNCILLOR Joel Charles is supporting the intervention made today (Tuesday) by the Chief Executive of the Princess Alexandra Hospital to call for a £70 million injection of emergency capital funding to maintain key services at the existing site.

The Chief Executive is concerned, in particular, that the maternity service at the hospital is struggling.

Cllr Joel Charles is calling on the Government to allocate the Princess Alexandra Hospital a fair share of existing national funding that is supposed to be available to the NHS estate for critical maintenance and upgrades:

“Harlow’s hospital should not be at the back of the queue when it comes to accessing national funding for essential maintenance.

“The Government has claimed that it is in a position to act to address NHS estate issues, but it seems no one in Whitehall has woken up to the fact that the existing facilities at our hospital are operating without an adequate level of funding. This risks negatively impacting the existing standard of acute, outpatient and diagnostic services provided.

“I agree with the Chief Executive that urgent action must be taken. The Minister of State responsible for NHS capital, land and estates should be held to account for not releasing the funding our hospital needs right now.

It is also clear that our local Member of Parliament needs to do more to make sure the Government better understands the seriousness of the situation in Harlow.”

Wouldn't need £70m investment, if we had that new hospital they promised. Quick to jump all over others, but forget their promises. Almost as if they forgot they were in government.

Easy to shout about now, and I have to ask why they hell his party didn't do anything to help the Princess Alexandra Hospital in the 14 years that they were in Government, apart from making false promises about a new hospital that they knew they had no real funding for.

Perhaps the chancellor of the exchequer could release some of the capital it owns in America. And the UK government could stand by Russia.Make friends with her. Instead of blowing thousands of people to bits. You know Russia is very generous to it's friends. Quite frankly this resource war has gone too far. It's costing England a fortune.. Money that could be given to Pah. Enough said.

If they hadn't squandered all that effort and cash on the chimera of a new Boris hospital- spent millions without even a site, and the one they were looking at would be unacceptable in location, health and safety etc. In the time, they could have redeveloped the buildings piecemeal as they did, say, at Burn-Mill school. Highly paid executives appointed, but no foundations and a poor case. Too much contracted out, dependence on agency staff etc, clueless reorganisations. If there's to be £70M, let's have a clear, achievable plan which can be voted on by the community. No gimmicks, replaced buildings where necessary but, above all, decently paid NHS sourced staff.

Admin take a huge proportion of the money. We desperately need more nursing staff.Ni k without Agency staff the hospital services wouldn't exist. We desperately need more trained nursing staff. That being said I thought there was another maternity hospital a few miles away taking the pressure off pah. I spoke to a member of the maternity staff a while ago and had my eyes opened about the amount of trained nurses that left the country to get better lifestyles. So we can train them..Infact we are excellent at that. But fall short of keeping them in the country. Or they just go private I. We need to keep to budget regarding building works. But it has already been said that Glaxo has a building up the road . Disused by all accounts. But what would I know about repurposed buildings.I am just another stupid member of the public.xx
