Councillor responds to residents concerns over traffic in Potter Street

News / Tue 10th Jun 2025 at 08:29am

ON MONDAY, we published a press release from Potter Street residents concerned over speeding traffic on London Road.

The portfolio holder for the environment (and a Church Langley South and Potter Street councillor) Nicky Purse, sent us this response.

Cllr Purse said: “I fully recognise the concerns raised by residents about both speeding and parking, particularly near key junctions such as the White Horse pub and Church Road. I have been engaging with residents on this matter over recent months and have responded to each of their communications, including providing guidance on the appropriate processes for both parking restrictions and speed reduction measures.

It is important that any interventions—such as the introduction of yellow lines or traffic calming—are properly evidenced and have broad resident support. That is why I have advised residents to prepare a full application for the North Essex Parking Partnership (NEPP), including detailed plans and local consultation. As a Cabinet Member with responsibilities linked to NEPP, I will be able to support their application once those steps are in place.

Regarding speed reduction, I have also encouraged residents to engage with the Local Highways Panel, which considers schemes such as chicanes, speed signage, and road narrowing. I understand a recent speed check was undertaken by Essex Police and I am awaiting confirmation of the results to help inform the next steps. I am also aware of the recent serious accident in Church Road, and I have raised this concern with the relevant authorities.

While I am committed to supporting residents and working toward solutions, it is also important that due process is followed to ensure that any measures implemented are effective, safe, and sustainable for the community.

“Thank you again for highlighting this issue. I remain fully engaged with both NEPP and the Highways Panel and will continue working with residents and colleagues to ensure this matter receives the appropriate attention”.

There have been many times at residents meeting the subject of speeding through Potter Street has been discussed. It is far better to attend these meetings and show a united front than the odd complaint on Facebook. As the chair of the residents group I'm prepared to bring the matter up at the highways panel but as Councilor Purse has said it must be something that has the support of the residents
