Greens quiz council over wheelchair access to new properties

General / Tue 17th Jun 2025 at 09:00am

A MEMBER of the Harlow Green Party questioned the Conservative run council over wheelchair access at new council properties.

Jennifer Steadman asked the following questions:

There are quite a few hoardings around town advertising the building, by Harlow Council, of 3-4 bedroom houses that will be wheelchair accessible.

Wheelchair accessible homes are in short supply because retro fitting existing properties to meet accessibility standards is often expensive, technically challenging and limited by structural constraints.

Can you please provide a construction timeline, when building will commence and ultimately when families can expect to move in?

Reply from Councillor Dan Swords (Leader of the Council):

The council is delivering its mission to rebuild our town and the construction of
the biggest council house building programme for a generation.

As each site completes, they will be made available for residents on the Housing
Needs register, and we look forward to welcoming families to their new home
from September this year when the first of this phase of council homes will be
completed.

Of the first eleven sites within Phase 1 of our Council House Building`Programme, four are currently in main construction with the remaining seven sites moving into main construction within the next six weeks.

That good news . Could you please inform the public how many council homes are due to be. Built as they are curious. Also if you have the labour governments backing. I know this is none of my business. But I am aware that you are proposing to build a new hospital. Until then could you ask the government to rebuild PAH 1.As it is very important that our services are able to cope locally. And it is very dear to me that the local hospital is has a future for this end of Harlow. That being said would you please be truthful on the future plans of the public health building. As it is starting to fall to bits. I only want the best for my town. And I know I have been a pain in the butt Even though you seem to have now got the grasp of informing your public. It would be helpful to have a clear idea if the labour councillors have had an input. I am aware that they have come to the aid of a sewage problem recently.Well done. I know funds are stretched. That being said one of the older ladies that I know is struggling to get an appointment with her local hospital.,She is a very beautiful person and struggling with her elderly husband also. Can anything be done to help the elderly and vulnerable people to get priority appointments Sir. Again, thankyou for keeping us updated.hugs x
