Over the border: Basildon Council continues clamp down on e-scooters

News / Sat 9th Aug 2025 at 11:06am

WE often like to have a peek at the approach that Basildon Council have adopted towards e-scooters.

Here is their latest press release.

===========

BASILDON Council is launching a targeted enforcement day to address the unlawful use of bikes and e-scooters in Basildon Town Centre. Those caught flouting the rules will face immediate consequences, including having their bikes or e-scooters seized by the police, crushed, and recycled.
Working alongside local police, council enforcement officers will carry out strict measures against anyone violating the regulations.

This move reflects the council’s ongoing commitment to tackling illegal e-bike and e-scooter activity within the town centre. Under the Public Space Protection Order (PSPO), the use of motorised vehicles – including e-scooters is prohibited in designated pedestrian areas. Offenders risk an on-the-spot fine of £100.

Cllr Kerry Smith, Cabinet Member for Law, Order & Enforcement, commented:

“Our PSPO clearly bans riding bikes and scooters – electric or otherwise – within the pedestrian zone of the Town Centre. Despite this, we continue to receive numerous complaints from residents, shoppers, and local businesses about delivery riders speeding through the area, posing significant safety hazards.

“Many families, disabled people, older residents, and vulnerable individuals have expressed concerns and now avoid the town centre out of fear of accidents caused by reckless riders.

“This situation is unacceptable, and we are determined to take firm action to protect the safety of everyone in Basildon Town Centre.

“Residents have had enough of these illegal speeding vehicles charging through our town centre. It’s not Le Mans!

If Harlow council are cracking down on these people how is it that every day there a lots of them still riding through the town centre? Could it be more lies from the council or just more incompetence?

@Paul or I suspect both. Right now we need a statement from Swords categorically stating that Harlow Council does not support and will not institute an e-scooter trial in the town and is actively working with police and community safety to remove these dangerous uninsured scooters from our streets shopping centres and hatches.
