Letter to Editor: On flags and displays of nationalism

Dear Editor,
I CAME across an interesting piece of research from Michael Skey, lecturer in Media and Culture at the University of East Anglia, dated January 2014 regarding flags.
Mr Skey’s research study was looking at symbols of nationhood in three areas: Cardiff, Saffron Walden and East Ham in London.

In relation to Britain’s attitude towards flags it says on page 279:
“It’s also worth noting that overt displays of nationality have generally been treated with suspicion in Britain, notably by the majority English. For instance, the display and waving of British flags outside a narrow range of carefully managed mass rituals (royal weddings, military parades, sporting events) was seen to be anathema or the preserve of extremist groups.
Paradoxically, this has meant that British ‘superiority’ has long been defined by an apparent ‘agnosticism towards nationalism‘ (Kumar, 2000: 577), which has been favourably contrasted with the uncontrollable passions of ‘other’ groups.”
Then follows a paragraph concerning more recent trends relating to devolution, growing ethnic diversity and its related debates about multiculturalism and community cohesion “producing a response among the ethnic majority, which has sometimes manifested itself in more aggressive displays of national markers (Skey, 2010)…”
To summarize the history of attitudes of flags in Britain Skey goes on to say:
“Given the complexity of the British socio-political landscape and the earlier comments about the visibility of flags in different national settings, Britain, as a multinational state with an increasingly diverse population and an ambivalent relationship with overt displays of nationalism (compared with say the USA or Sweden) would seem to be a particularly interesting case study for a project such as this.”
Consequently, this research proves what many of us already instinctively know: that the recent proliferation of flags is a cultural aberration in this country.
This leads me to believe we must collectively oppose the far-right and their flag mania. In this regard USDAW’s deputy regional secretary Phil Waite, Harlow Labour Group Leader James Griggs and councillor Kay Morrison are giving me some hope. Well done Kay, Phil and James.

David Forman
It's the flag of the country we live in. Stop being stupid and finding racism in everything you deranged lefty.
Would the same be said if everyone flew a Palestinian flag???? I think not. This is England and this 🏴 is our countries flag! Like it or lump it. From someone that always flies her flag proudly !
All this research for a letter about flags to the local paper in Harlow.
Palestine and England flag shaggers should just leave the country and juat let the rest of ua normal people live in peace
Palestine and England flag shaggers should leave the country and just let the rest of us normal people live in peace
All national flags are *all* implicitly 'racist' as nation states are, upon the whole, racial and ethnic constructs. And there's nothing wrong with that either. Insofar as the multiracial society that has been foisted upon the indigenous English against their will becomes more degenerate and ugly, the England flag will become a more potent symbol of resistance.
Very interesting perspective David Forman. We can assume you have been on googled scholar to selectively lift this article. The point you miss and actually the main point is how the establishment divide the people so they turn on each other.
A well known left-wing writer, selectively quoting a left-wing lecturer to support his opinion. It was the left-wing obsession with flying that EU blue flag with the stars, instead of either the Union Flag or the Cross of St.George that allowed the misuse of our National Flags by vile Extreme organisations such as the BNP. In addition I point out that unlike other National Flags, the Union Flag represents a "Union", in short a coming together of England, Ireland, Scotland and N.Ireland. I would suggest that alone shows how ludicrous the idea that our National flags are racist really is! Furthermore, I would urge you to look at how many of our Commonwealth friends have the Union Flag as part of their flags - Australia, N.Zealand, and many in the Carribbean - all diverse communities themselves, who I suggest wouldn't want anything racist in their National flags.
Should we tell HRH , the England football and Rugby teams , men and women , and the Olympic athletes , plus the proms to take down and stop waving their flags. I wonder if the U.S.A. have the same problem, as there is millions of flags flown there. I imagine David Foreman and the like are ashamed of being British. I can't remember there being any problem with flying the flag when we freed the Falkland Islands .
I was in Sunderland today, full of racists waving the English flag. They're not fooling me by claiming they were the English womans rugby team playing and beating Somoa. Pah.
Harlow has always had a problem with racist organisations; NF, BNP; EDL; now 'Reform Ltd.' The Union Flag has been hijacked by these racists- they claim to be supporting Britain but they are actually mocking us and our values while dating us to remove their symbols. The Swastika was once a symbol of hope and peace, until Adolf hijacked it as the symbol of his imaginary Aryan race. Eventually people who didn't wear it were called traitors and attacked in the street. Nigel Farage, instead of attending the opening of parliament is going to the US to attack our government and endorse a woman who was found by three judges to have incited violence, and willingly pleaded guilty... repeatedly. He will claim that our judges are politically biased. Because one person at the 'Bell Hotel,Epping is accused of a possible sex crime, the racists have declared all immigrants a threat to women and children. This is not a British attitude to law or decency. What is also indefensible is Councillor Swords attitude to but removing the flags: more important things to do! Where is the planning permission? Where is the health and safet assessment? Who is paying for this very expensive captain? Is s/he a British citizen? Imagine if ordinary folks put their mainsheet flags everywhere, or put up the pictures of Farage, in full 1930s nazi regalia as he strutted round the streets of Dulwich as a youth. Would that be acceptable?
Funny how the left care more about rainbow flags or Palestinian flags than their own countries flag
So we have well known Ukip and Reform candidates Mark Gough and Peter Lamb praising the flag operation. We also have the The Times, Guardian and Daily Mirror newspapers quoting Hope not Hate's research on the fascists behind Operation Raise the Colours. See for yourself at https://hopenothate.org.uk/2025/08/22/operation-raise-the-colours-organised-by-well-known-far-right-extremists/
We have on this letter's comments well known Islamaphobia hate spreader and Reform candidate Peter Lamb exposed in years past by YourHarlow: https://www.yourharlow.com/2019/03/17/leading-harlow-conservative-condemns-islamophobia-after-peter-lamb-scandal/
David I will continue to defend my views on Radical Islamists and the impact they have had on our safety, you may well close your eyes to the outrageous attacks on innocent people by these terrorists over the past decade or ignore the almost 40 thousand radical Islamists on the government terror watchlist, but I like many others value my freedoms without some Radicalised Religious terrorist attempting end all that
Peter Lamb, and extreme right wing terrorism is also a threat to the citizens of the UK, and the numbers being monitored are rising.
A good point by Mr George. As this Guardian article shows, the far-right are the organisers of the asylum hotel protests which explains the criminal conduct requiring arrests to be made: https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2025/aug/23/members-of-far-right-party-organising-asylum-hotel-protests-across-uk-facebook-posts-show
When a flag is used to shut down debate or to suggest who does and doesn’t belong, it ceases to be a neutral expression of pride. Patriotism is not about exclusion. Would flying a Palestinian flag be treated in the same spirit as flying the St George’s Cross? If we truly believe in free expression and equal pride in identity, then the answer should be yes. A flag should not be wielded as a shield for some while others are criticised or harassed for displaying theirs. If flags are to mean something positive, they must symbolise shared belonging not serve as lines of division.
Some people on hear are watching too much MSM TV, try viewing some of what real people are watching and recording.
Mark Gough you sum it up quite nicely.
When did we get to this point of not being able to fly our English flags except for sporting events...without being racist...Other Countries flags have been everywhere the last two years. We may not like it but they have a right to raise it and so should we...
Great letter. Context and intent is everything. The flags were put up without permission on public property by racists wearing balaclavas to avoid being recognised. They knew they had no authority to do this. Very happy for the public to appropriate them as symbols of national unity and pride as some councilors have suggested but how exactly without 'good' intentions being hijacked by the far right? Until there is a plan to do this I have taken the flag outside my house down and frankly Essex county council should do the right thing and take down the rest.
It is a bad state of affairs to weoponise our countries flag. I don't agree with it .You would be put in prison for insighting racism Which person is responsible for this disgraceful behaviour.Take them down now please.
Fly your flags proudly from your own property but when they are attached to public infrastructure that is flyposting.Presumably no sanctions will be brought to the perpetrators placing these flags in these positions and therefore presumably no sanctions could be brought to anyone who decides to take them down or decides to swap them for jolly rogers.
