Major upgrade for train station to town centre walking route under way

WORK is progressing to transform the walking route between Harlow Town Station and the town centre, addressing a long-standing issue for Harlow residents and visitors.

This route, which has been a concern for decades, is now a central focus of a wider effort to improve how people move around Harlow. As part of the town’s Sustainable Transport Corridor (STC) project, the area is being comprehensively upgraded to make walking and cycling safer, easier, and more enjoyable.
The improvements include new landscaping to make the route more attractive, a community-designed mural to celebrate local identity, and digital signage to help people find their way and encourage walking. These enhancements are being supported by a £49,000 grant from Greater Anglia’s Customer and Community Improvement Fund.
But this is just one piece of a much bigger picture. The STC is a major infrastructure programme that connects key destinations across Harlow including the station, town centre, and business hubs, with new footpaths, cycle lanes, better lighting, and safer crossings. Work is already underway along Zelenskyy Avenue, where new cycle lanes and footpaths are being built, alongside upgrades to junctions and public spaces.
The transformation also links directly with the redevelopment of Harlow’s transport interchange near the town centre. Backed by £23.7 million from the Government’s Towns Fund, the interchange will feature a new bus station and waiting area, a cycle hub for 80 bikes, improved access and safety, greener public spaces, and seamless connections to the STC.
Councillor Dan Swords, Leader of Harlow Council, said:
“This is about more than just a walking route – it’s about fixing something that hasn’t worked for years and creating a better experience for everyone who lives, works, and visits Harlow. So many visitors to Harlow have complained to me about the muddle route from the station to the town centre – that’s why we’re transforming it.
“We’re delivering a joined-up, long-term solution that makes it easier and safer to get around our town. These improvements are part of a much wider transformation that includes the Sustainable Transport Corridor and the new transport interchange.
“Together, they will help us build a more connected Harlow that works for the future.”
Councillor Alastair Gunn, Cabinet Member for Garden Town and Planning, added:
“With the works to the new sustainable transport corridor due to conclude on time and on budget by the end of this year, Harlow Council securing this additional funding is more good news as we head towards 2026.
“The major works we’ve seen this past 18 months, which have been disruptive, have been all about upgrading how we travel to and from the town centre and train station in future, taking into account Harlow’s planned growth.
“Improving the look of that last bit of the journey to the station will make our town all the more welcoming and easier to get around, for people visiting as well as residents commuting.”
Work on the mural and landscaping will begin later this year, with local residents helping to shape the design.
I wonder how many people this is an issue for. Less than 10? On a list of things people actually want for the town, it’s so irrelevant it won’t be on a list.
Here we go again. The Conservative administration are now scrapping the barrel to find something to get an article published, an issue which has been staring us all in the face for about two years causing misery for thousands of motorists. As for "Harlows planned growth" the fact is of course most of this is at Gilston, not part of Harlow or even Essex. Nothing that has been built will ease congestion for the traffic that already builds up around that part of the town and as for the £23.7 million, well given the chance I bet we could all think of better things this should have been spent on.
Tbh there was nothing wrong with the shared pathway that was already there . It looks like the replacement has less visibility from the road making people potentially more vulnerable. The level of chaos this whole project has caused the town is ridiculous. Just exactly how is this route muddled? Its practically a straight line between the two. More to the point the route has essentially remained the same apart from adding some potentially lethal crossing points on the roundabouts
Are the Gilston New Town people paying for any of the infrastructure that is needed for their housing estates? – Come to think of it, what are this Hill Group giving back to the town?
I'm glad this is being done. I remember walking from Harlow Town station to Harlow College. It wasn't a very pedestrian-friendly journey!
How many people actually walk from the town centre to the station and vice versa?
One of the biggest mistakes that Gibberd made when he designed the town centre was not building it around or next to the railway station. As far l’m aware all the New Towns that were built around that era did have close access to either an existing railway station or one was provided soon afterwards. And we are suffering his costly mistake. Once the upgrade roadworks have finally been completed, will it mean that ALL Harlow buses will be calling at the station, throughout the day, not just at selected times during the evening. Or does it mean that the bus services will just carry on as they are at the moment, resulting the majority of fare paying passengers paying a fare to the town centre then another to the station.
The biggest issue is cyclists insisting on using the roads and ignoring cycle paths. When all this is done, ti.e for some legal changes to enforce the use of cycle paths.
Cosmetic upgrade, can't see it making any difference, Trams across Harlow ,don't make me laugh ! I can't see this "upgrade"finishing on time ,never seems to be much going on ,it's autumn now and there are no signs of completion. People walking to the town centre from the railway station ,it's ok if you are able to walk ! These projects are designed by people.who have normal physical functions .
We've been saying for years all we need is a mural!
It's the whole area which needs a thorough redesign the station needs updating the bus station the whole approach is confusing
I understand that there is no direct walking/cycling path. But if you spent 18 months on this the massive thing would be to rebuild the bridge access to 414. This is why all the gridlock is. Widen the whole road for cars so no gridlock in the peak times
So the round about by the town centre has pedestrian crossing now that were not there before and we had a cycle track and footpath from the town centre to the railway station what a load of malarkey
