Over the border: Enfield Council given £7 million cash boost to house families including refugees

Politics / Sat 18th Oct 2025 at 07:10am

ENFIELD Council has been award £7million in government funding to house families including refugees reports the Local Democracy Reporter.

Council leader Ergin Erbil yesterday (Wednesday 15th) said that a council-owned company would be delivering a Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) funded property acquisition programme to rehouse refugees from Afghanistan, under the government’s resettlement programme, as well as local families in temporary accommodation.

The grant will cover the purchase of 33 homes, which will be completed by March next year. Extra money from City Hall, as well as the council’s own ‘Right to Buy’ receipts, will cover the cost of a further 30 homes this year.

Council-owned company Housing Gateway Limited (HGL) offers shorthold tenancies to enable the council to house homeless people in temporary accommodation.

Cllr Erbil told Wedensday’s meeting: “Housing Gateway continues to support the council by providing good-quality, affordable homes and reducing the need for expensive temporary accommodation.

“This is one of the best things our borough does, we save a lot of money and we provide good, quality housing to our residents. This was one of the ways we had to adapt to tackle the housing crisis caused by the previous Tory government.

“I think we’re doing a great job here, for example HGL is delivering strategic housing programmes including £7m funding to buy homes for our refugees, families in temporary accommodation, plus 30 more homes using other funding sources.”

Sabri Ozaydin, the council’s cabinet member for environment and placemaking, asked the leader how the company was “helping the council deliver better value for money” when it came to housing.

In response, Cllr Erbil said: “The company’s model allows us to maintain control over housing standards and costs ensuring public money is used efficiently and effectively and for local families in need.

“By reducing the use of expensive nightly paid accommodation and investing in long-term housing, HGL is helping the council save money while improving homes for residents.”

Associate cabinet member Chris James asked what the growth in HGL’s housing portfolio “means for Enfield residents”.

Cllr Erbil said: “The expansion of HGL’s portfolio means more families in Enfield now have access to safe, stable and affordable homes.

“It also means less families are placed in emergency or unsuitable accommodation as you know during the housing crisis due to underfunding from the previous Tory government councils like ours were forced to put families in accommodation we wouldn’t want to put them in

“This growth supports our wider ambition to provide long term housing solutions that meet the needs of our residents and reduce the social and financial cost of homelessness.”

Many readers may not be aware of the consequences of this cash boost. That is, Enfield Council may buy up homes in areas which are cheaper than in Enfield, such as in Harlow. Harlow Council get accused of "allowing" people from outside of the town to come and live here, the reality of the situation is of course that the council cannot stop another council from buying individual homes scattered across the town.

One sentence by HGL has assured me this is a con. "Council-owned company Housing Gateway Limited (HGL)offers shorthold tenancies to enable the council to house homeless people in temporary accommodation."... What happens at the end of that shorthold tennancy? This is a short term fix for a long term problem where someone in the chain, will be making a lot of money.

Nice to see that the people in Afghanistan who helped British forces are being looked after. To think that a Farage led government could potentially ship them back to the murderous Taliban is beyond vile. As charity Freedom from Torture says: "But threatening Afghan refugees with being sent back into the arms of the Taliban is not only cruel - it is shameful." The Liberal Democrats deputy leader Daisy Cooper gave her thoughts on Nigel Farage doing deals with the Taliban: "Reform’s Taliban tribute plan would send British taxpayers’ cash to fund their oppressive regime, fuelling the persecution of Afghan women and children and betraying our brave armed forces who sacrificed so much fighting the Taliban. Clearly British values mean nothing to Farage and his band of plastic patriots." I wonder if you understand the meaning of detterent David? As to the last mention of the 20,000 leak list, the vast majority of those settled in the U.K. never worked for the MOD or attributed services. Only around 10 to 15 per cent of the individuals on the list would have qualified for relocation under the emergency Afghan Relocation and Assistance Programme, known as ARAP. I've made a slight edit to one of your first sentence's to make a point "Nice to see that the British forces are being looked after"
