Harlow MP praises creative wellbeing workshops for unpaid carers

Charity / Tue 18th Nov 2025 at 08:31am

HARLOW MP Chris Vince recently visited Making Space, a series of free creative wellbeing workshops designed for unpaid carers. The sessions are hosted at Latton Bush by Harlow Art Trust in partnership with art therapist Sarah Bracey and art and eco-psychotherapist Catherine Kiff.

The visit gave Chris the opportunity to meet participants and see first-hand the positive impact the project is having. Having previously worked as a Young Carers Service Manager for Action for Family Carers, he spoke warmly about the value of initiatives like Making Space.
“Unpaid carers do an incredible job supporting their loved ones, and it’s vital they get time for themselves too,” said Chris. “Projects like Making Space offer that moment of respite and creativity – it’s wonderful to see. A big thank you to everyone who has organised and delivered such great and uplifting sessions.”

He went on to add, “It’s fantastic to see the difference these workshops make to unpaid carers here in Harlow. Sometimes carers can be overlooked, and yet they play such an important role in our community. What’s brilliant is that these sessions not only give them time to relax and be creative but also remind them to take that space for themselves. You really can’t underestimate the therapeutic benefits of art and creativity.”

Over tea and conversation, Chris joined Sarah and Catherine to learn more about how the workshops provide a calm, welcoming space where carers can relax, explore art, and connect with others who share similar experiences.

“Carers often put themselves second,” said Catherine. “These sessions give them a chance to meet others who understand, to relax, and to remember that they deserve care and time for themselves too.”
Sarah added, “Being creative is so important for mental health. When you’re painting or making something, you switch off from everyday stresses. The carers enjoy sharing experiences and supporting one another. It’s lovely to see the difference – they come in tired or tense, and by the end, they’re smiling, chatting, and visibly lighter.”

The Making Space project is part of a three-year creative wellbeing partnership between Harlow Art Trust, Sarah Bracey, and Catherine Kiff, supported by the Essex County Council Unpaid Carers Fund. The aim is to support unpaid carers of all ages in Harlow — from children and young people to adults — through art, nature, and community connection.

If you or someone you know is an unpaid carer who would like to take part, Making Space will be holding sessions this month at both Latton Bush and the Gibberd Gallery.

Good to see Chris Vince learning new skills that will allow him to while away his spare time come May 2029. On a more serious note it is good to see the benefits derived from the Making Space project.
