M&S reveals Harlow as a location for new food store

M&S has revealed a list of 500 target locations for new food stores, including Harlow, Bishop’s Stortford, Great Dunmow and Hertford.
Currently, the closest specialist outlets stocking a full range of groceries are in Braintree and Epping.

The chain aims to double the size of its food business and has 20 stores opening or renewing before the end of the financial year, creating 800 new jobs.
M&S says it is looking for highly visible and accessible sites capable of delivering trading space of 1,672.25 sq m (18,000 sq ft) at 500 potential locations.
Alex Freudmann, managing director of M&S Food, said: “The strong performance of our new M&S food stores gives us the confidence to explore even more locations across the UK, from Elgin to Exmouth.
“With more than 20 stores opening or modernised before the end of the financial year, we are moving faster.
Our team want new sites where we could open a large M&S Food store as we deliver on our strategy to bring the right stores to the right places and offer the best shopping experience, range and availability for our customers.”
The business says it is reshaping for growth with the key aim of expanding the size of its food stores “to stock a fuller range and attract more customers to do their weekly shop”.
The new stores feature an extended range of M&S Food, wider aisles for bigger shopping trolleys and larger car parks for more family shoppers.
Don’t get too excited about this. M&S states that over the next three years, “We will also increase our Food offering from 328 to 420 stores.” (Source: https://corporate.marksandspencer.com/about-us/our-properties) With less than 100 new stores actually opening, and Harlow being just one of 500 target locations, there’s a good chance that we simply don’t get one. Lots of similar stories have been appearing across the UK press today, and it’s really strange that this has been reported so uncritically – nobody seems to have looked at the actual plans.
Nick - this is also just a food store. We were promised an M&S by Dan, not an M&S food.
I don't think anyone should hold there breath. The simple fact is there is no-where of the size M&S want vacant in the town or indeed likely to to be any time soon. The former Mothercare shop is "only" 14,794 sq ft in size, so somewhat smaller than the 18,000 M&S are looking for. Who knows though, perhaps in the longer term one will be built within the seven new housing estates (sorry, I meant to type villages) at Gilston so we will all be catching a bus, cycling or walking there to shop rather than everyone living in Gilston coming into Harlow.
There's the remain 2/5th of Homebase that IKEA didn't take - Don't suppose that Argos will be there much longer
I remember Dan Swords promising that M&S were coming to the town this time last year. Looks more like a marketing wheeze by M&S and Dan than a serious proposal.
Come on folks. My money is on M&S building a new store in Harlow before Dan gets the new flats at Burnt Mill filled up!
Even if we got an M&S Food Store it would be a start, save having to schlep to Epping or Stortford. There must be somewhere up the town where M&S could slot in nicely.
What about where Gratnells used to be, at the back of Wickes on Howard Way? M&S Food could use one of those units if they're being built as retail?
M&S intended to place a food shop at the trading estate years ago, and the very over-optimistic council naively denied them, in the belief pressure would make the owners keep a town centre store. Of course M&S went ahead and shut the store anyway. Years later M&S will proceed with their original plan.
Well I think a m&s is great news for harlow.
