Harlow mum of six-year-old Ruby, who died months after routine appendix operation, hopes ‘lessons will be learnt from daughter’s death’

THE mum of a 6-year-old girl from Harlow who died months after a routine appendix operation says she is’ hopeful lessons will be learnt from her death in hospital.’ reports the Local Democracy Reporter.
Ruby Rose Trussler died in hospital from sepsis brought on by a bowel obstruction, caused by scar issue from an earlier appendix removal operation.

Five months after that routine operation, Ruby was admitted to Princess Alexandra Hospital on October 7, having complained of pain. She was transferred to Addenbrooke’s Hospital by ambulance to have an operation on October 8 , which the family says ‘should have been quick and easy.’
Ruby’s Mum, Emma, said there were ‘delays with organising an X-Ray and transport from PAH to Addenbrookes.’ But Ruby contracted sepsis and, over the next following days in the PICU at Addenbrooke’s, Ruby had several operations.

She didn’t wake up after the first operation. On Friday October 11 a week after she first became sick, Ruby’s parents made the painful decision to turn off the machine that was keeping her alive.
She said Princess Alexandra have committed to changes to improve their services following an inquest hearing that concluded earlier in the month with the cause of death as natural causes.
She said: “This is what we wanted because we don’t want anyone else to go through what would go through.” The family add the charity they have set up – the Ruby Rose Foundation – will ensure Ruby’s name will endure.
She said: “In setting up The Ruby Rose Foundation, we can ensure that Ruby’s legacy will live on forever. We are hoping this will help families who have been affected by sepsis because we know personally as well how much bereavement counselling costs and hopefully we would like to be able to help people if they need it.”
Jo Ward, Interim Chief Nurse at The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust (PAHT), said: “We offer our deepest condolences on the sad loss of Ruby and our thoughts continue to be with her family.
“We are unable to comment on individual cases, however, we have fully investigated the circumstances surrounding Ruby’s care and treatment at our hospital and with our partner organisations. We are committed to ensuring that learning from any incident is part of our focus on continuous improvement.”
PAH always learning, but not improving. No wonder they near the bottom of the hospital league table.
They never learn these lessons it is what the state says when it F**ks up, no one is ever held to account, lessons are never learned. It is why the state should be minimal, the NHS should be private and accountable.

Chris, Dan and anyone representing us in administration, please you need to do something about this hospital. Not build a new one, do something about how it is run now, it cannot wait. How many cases like this need to happen? Look at the reviews by people at any Pah related article, look at the Google reviews and what people are commenting about their experiences, look at the quality reviews and the cases they settled. What more info is needed to act urgently here? The situation is serious. Trigger an investigation, audit the hospital, just see what is happening there, please. I’ve been in the A&E and the team there was not skilled to the point it made me fear being there. I will not use this hospital ever in my life. There is something wrong happening there
PAH are very good at offering their condolences, but very poor otherwise.
I have lost count of the number of stories like this over the years. It’s time for the politicians to have a serious look at the entire system. Even emergency health care is a lottery now, and surely that should be the backbone of the NHS. Never in our history has so much been paid by so many to so few for so little
PAH has been in a right state for way over 10 years. It is insane that nobody seems to care and no politician who claims to 'work for the people of Harlow' does anything, not a flipping thing. My own experiences have been dreadful in so many departments and each year it just gets worse. Even a private apt I was forced to make, the consultant there said go to Cambs, as Harlow is dangerous. This is absolutely frightening to hear from a doctor! Sod pretty town centres, sod new houses, sod the potholes. Without health the rest is just noise.
Poor little Ruby and her poor family, my heart goes out them, this should never have happened, what a shocking and shameful state for PAH to be in. Chris Vince MP, action on PAH's issues are overdue, what are you going to do about them?
My dad was admitted 31 March 2025 as his hip had fractured, because of the complexity of the fracture he was going to be transfer to addenbrooks for the operation which should have been straight away .He was eventually transfered 5th may for an op which took place 15th may ,he was in hospital for 81 day to repair a hip fracture ,which with other complications led to him passing in December 2025 .This should have been a straight immediate transfer and operation actioned really quickly, but due to lack of communication by both hospitals and umpteen excuses this was the unfortunate pathway to my dad's demise.Atrocious hospital .
When my girls was in Harlow hospital nicu and got transferred to addenbrookes they left all my express milk in their freezer and completely forgot to hand them over to the pandr team, Harlow hospital has been amazing with my girls but they do need improving especially in nicu and children's apartments
