Controversial scenes at Holocaust Memorial service at Harlow Council

History / Mon 26th Jan 2026 at 12:55pm

THERE were controversial scenes at a Holocaust Memorial event held in the Harlow Council chambers on Sunday evening.

Over the last few years, holocaust services have also referenced wars and other genocides in history such as Rwanda, Bosnia, Cambodia to name just three.

But in the middle of a performance by performing arts group Razed Roof ,a member made a statement about Gaza.

He said: “In 2023, 70,000 Palestinians in Gaza Strip are indiscriminately killed by the State of Israel.”

There were shouts from the assembled audience and people were clearly upset.

When Rabbi Irit Shillor, of the Harlow Jewish Community, who led the service, returned to the microphone, she said: “I’d just like to note that the last statement is a statement of opinion. It’s not fact”

The incident happened in the 47th minute of our film below.

The whole event was a moving ceremony under the title of Bridging Generations

Speeches were made by the chair of Harlow Council, Cllr Andrew Johnson, Harlow MP Chris Vince, the leader of Harlow Council, Dan Swords.

Other speakers included Co-Founder of the Ghana Union, Helen Verrier, President of the Harlow Hindu Society, Nishall Garala, Area Dean of Harlow, Rev Darren McIndoe and many others.

Not only was there the lighting of six candles but also a number of pieces called 80 Objects and 80 Lives.

The film of the event is below.

It's a shame that protest such as this take place however the total destruction of Gaza and the continued attack on Palestinians far exceeded justified retribution

Enough now

A Holocaust Memorial service is not the right moment for this... but is it a statement of opinion as claimed? As of 6 January 2026, over 73,600 people (72,437 Palestinians and 2,109 Israelis) have been reported killed in the Gaza war according to the Gaza Health Ministry and Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including 248 journalists and media workers, and over 224 humanitarian aid workers. Scholars have estimated 80% of Palestinians killed are civilians. A study by OHCHR, which verified fatalities from three independent sources, found that 70% of the Palestinians killed in residential buildings or similar housing were women and children. Seems multiple sources have confirmed that over 70,000 Palestinians have been killed. Of course, the State of Israel had a right to defend itself, but this is no longer defensive. 34 Palestinian deaths for each Israeli death... the numbers speak for themselves, enough is enough... Stop the war.

Israel have a right to defend themselves. Continuously, disproportionately and now very much unjustifiably. Stop israel, Stop the genocide

Disgusting behaviour from Razed roof. Lets be honest, those kids didn't come up with that statement themselves. Clearly told to do this by whoever runs that group. It was not the time or place to make that statement and damn right inappropriate.

Enough Now. You say a holocaust memorial service is not the right moment for this. Then you draw your cue from that very anti-semitism for your own diatribe. The local Jewish community as a group have nothing to do with the state of Israel or what has been happening in Gaza. Why even mention it here?

Adam...calling people with learning difficulties "idiots" shows how much of a vile individual you are. I hope you find some inner peace & happiness

Ironic that a genocide has been denied at a Holocaust memorial service.
