Letter to Editor: Severe criticism of political leaders over Razed Roof ban

Dear Editor
RAZED Roof Theatre Company is being collectively punished by Harlow Council after one of its members referred to the killing of 70,000 Palestinian Arab people in the Gaza Strip during its performance at the Holocaust Memorial Day event at Harlow Civic Centre on Sunday 25 January. Holocaust Memorial Day commemorates not only the victims of genocide or crimes against humanity perpetrated by the Nazi German regime and its confederates during the Second World War, but also all who have been victims of genocide or crimes against humanity since the end of that war.

The speakers from Razed Roof at the Holocaust Memorial Day commemoration mentioned deliberate starvation in Ukraine in 1933, and mass killings in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia-Herzegovina, the Darfur region of Sudan, and in Myanmar (formerly Burma), as well as the persecution of the Uyghurs in China.
No-one has criticised Razed Roof for mentioning any of these examples of genocide, crimes against humanity, or persecution, although for every single one of them there are people who would dispute the evidence. Indeed, I once had the misfortune to encounter a man from Rwanda who denied that 800,000 Tutsi people were massacred in 100 days in that country in 1994. That some people turned their heads and pretended that they didn’t see the gross violations of international law perpetrated in the Gaza Strip does not mean that those crimes did not occur.
The Holocaust historian Amos Goldberg, of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, accused the State of Israel of committing genocide in the Gaza Strip in April 2024. Amnesty International issued a report in December 2024 that concluded that the State of Israel was committing genocide in the Gaza Strip. The International Association of Genocide Scholars passed a resolution on 31 August 2025 stating that genocide was occurring in the Gaza Strip.
However, Dan Swords, the (Conservative) Leader of Harlow Council, and Chris Vince, the (Labour) Member of Parliament for Harlow, are united in an effort to punish Razed Roof for the addition of the slaughter in the Gaza Strip to the list of mass killings that were mentioned at the event.
Chris Vince has resigned as a trustee of Razed Roof, and Harlow District Council has prohibited it from using Council facilities, venues, or assets.
It is appalling to see both Mr Swords and Mr Vince joining the infamous ranks of the genocide deniers. Indeed, so determined is Mr Swords to silence those who speak out against genocide in the Gaza Strip that he is reporting Razed Roof to the Charity Commission and asking the police to investigate its members for exercising their right to free speech on this issue.
Expressing the opinion that the State of Israel committed genocide in the Gaza Strip is neither racist nor illegal, and is not at all “extremist” or an expression of “hatred” or “intimidation”.
Mr Swords appears to be either deluded or simply reciting untruths, for there were no “references to a proscribed organisation” and no “potential commission of criminal offences” by the Raised Roof Theatre Company at the Holocaust Memorial Day event or on any other occasion. I am not a lawyer, but it seems to me that Mr Sword’s false accusations may amount to libel. I suspect that Essex Police would treat any complaint by Mr Swords about the words spoken by Razed Roof as a vexatious waste of scarce public resources.
It is a disgrace that the people of Harlow are represented at the Civic Centre and in the House of Commons by people who not only turn a blind eye to the copious evidence that the gravest crime in international law has occurred in the Gaza Strip, but also punish people for drawing attention to this crime.
I hope that everyone who believes in free speech will demand that Harlow District Council immediately removes the threat of police action against the Razed Roof Theatre Company, removes the ban on it using Council facilities, venues, or assets, and undoes all other punitive actions against it.
Yours sincerely
John Wake
I totally agree with John's letter, who has regularly written Letters to Editor on the topic of Gaza which has updated the public on the unfolding slaughter.
Can I ask, did Dan Swords consult with the rest of the Councillors before issuing his "decree"? Do they all agree with him? Or was it just him working alone? In fact, I wonder how many of Harlow's residents agree with what he has done on behalf of Harlow?
It's worth remembering the Israeli government's early work with Hamas. The Times of Israel newspaper explains on 8 October 2023: "For years, the various governments led by Benjamin Netanyahu took an approach that divided power between the Gaza Strip and the West Bank — bringing Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas to his knees while making moves that propped up the Hamas terror group." See article at https://www.timesofisrael.com/for-years-netanyahu-propped-up-hamas-now-its-blown-up-in-our-faces/
Hamas were given multiple opportunities to release the innocent hostages brutally taken by Hamas in the aftermath of the horrific massacre they perpetrated against defenceless civilians. They refused. Israel has acted in self-defence to seek to secure the release of hostages and to destroy a terrorist group that not only poses a threat to Israel but also has oppressed and impoverished the people of Gaza. Let's not forget that both Hamas and Palestinian Action are proscribed terrorist groups. In fact Palestine Action was decreed a terrorist group by the current Labour government and Chris Vince MP voted in support of such designation. The Council had little option but to refer the matter to the police to investigate whether a crime had been committed. Hopefully, if no further action is deemed necessary, relations with Razed Roof might be resumed. This incident does show that actions have consequences. There have been a number of letters and reports on this incident in YH. Let's now give it a rest and move on.
Interesting that John Wake cites several bodies in his letter but omits to mention the only one that really counts: No UN body has passed a resolution explicitly declaring that Israel is committing “genocide” or formally condemning Israel as such for its war in Gaza. That is very telling.
Mark should know that the Israel have been locking up Palestinians without charge or trial for many years and well before October 7. In June 2023 the Israeli human rights organisation B'Tselem said: "According to figures published by the Israel Prison Service, in March 2023, Israel was holding 1,017 people in administrative detention, all but 15 of them Palestinians. Ten of the detainees are minors between the ages of 16 and 18. This is the highest number of administrative detainees since April 2003, when Israel held 1,140 administrative detainees." See article at https://www.btselem.org/administrative_detention/20230604_israel_breaks_20_year_record_holds_1002_palestinians_in_administrative_detention_in_march_2023
David Forman, I respect your position and comments. However. I wonder how many of the Palestinians held by Israel have died in captivity unlike many the hostages held by Hamas. This can only be described as cold-blooded murder by Hamas, who also have scant regard for the lives of Palestinians when using them as human shields. Once Hamas and Nethanayu are off the scene and more moderate leaders are in power, maybe progress and a lasting peace can be secured.
Still waiting to hear what law they broke ....I guess Swords doesn't like free speech
Mark, like you I wish for a better future. On the issue of Israeli hostages being killed, many have been killed in airstrikes by Israel as this news item confirms. See https://www.pbs.org/newshour/world/israel-says-high-probability-its-own-airstrike-killed-3-hostages-in-gaza-last-november
Frankly Dan Swords should not be enforcing israel's policies here in the UK. Disproportionate and collective punishment has always been their hallmark, and none more so evident than here. And to the dishonourable fellow above claiming the UN did not pass a resolution announcing genocide - you mean the same vote israel's ally the United States kept vetoing, the very same country that sanctioned the ICC for daring hold israel to account for war crimes? You'll be pleased to know the UN commission declared it a genocide. https://www.ohchr.org/en/press-releases/2025/09/israel-has-committed-genocide-gaza-strip-un-commission-finds
