Basketball: Harlow Hawks Girls produce fantastic victory in their first competitive game

Sport / Thu 12th Feb 2026 at 09:09am

THE Hawks girls hit the road on Sunday for their very first competitive game, taking on the Cambridge Cats.

With a strong squad of 13 to choose from, the girls came out firing and built an early lead, showing great confidence from the tip.

Cambridge kept battling back, but with smart rotation from the coaches, every player got solid minutes on the floor and contributed to the team effort. After a hard‑fought game, the Hawks came away with a well‑deserved **46–34 win**.

A fantastic performance from the girls and plenty of positives to build on as the season continues. Still lots to work on, but a brilliant start to their journey.

A big shout‑out to the Cambridge Cats for hosting and giving us a great game.

A Hawks spokesperson said: “A number of the secondary age group girls, when they first joined last season, were complete beginners to the game and didn’t know how to dribble the ball or some of the basic rules. They have come a long way since then.

Hawks started their girls only sessions last season, splitting them in two age groups – Primary age school years 4-6 and Secondary age school years (inc sixth form).

The Primary age group will have their first games scheduled in the coming few months.

Hawks are looking to build the girls side of the junior programme. At present the Primary age group sessions are on a Friday evening and Secondary age group sessions are on a Thursday evening.”
