Letter to Editor: Chris Vince – Don’t be a party to a war of aggression

Dear Editor
HARLOW MP Chris Vince appears to have nothing to say about the fact that Keir Starmer decided that the United Kingdom would give support to the US-Israeli bombardment of Iran. By allowing the armed forces of the USA to use British bases to launch attacks upon Iran, Keir Starmer has made the United Kingdom a co-belligerent in this war.

That the UK is now a co-belligerent puts the people of this country in danger of becoming victims of retaliation by the military forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Keir Starmer has put our lives at risk without consulting us. To act without the approval of elected Members of Parliament is autocratic.
Keir Starmer’s action is also a violation of international law. This is a war of aggression, a war of a type prohibited by treaties to which the UK is a party.
I am sure that Mr Vince has seen the ghastly images of the body bags containing the remains of dozens of Iranian primary school children, and I hope that his dismay at such images will prompt him to speak out against this unjust war.
The Labour Party Rule Book 2026 states that the Labour Party is committed to “co-operating in European institutions, the United Nations, the Commonwealth and other international bodies to secure peace” (Chapter 1, Clause IV (Part3)). The actions of Keir Starmer in relation to the current war against Iran are contrary to these principles. I hope that Chris Vince, as a Labour MP, will act to try to bring about the realisation of these principles.
I am sure that Mr Vince is in favour of democracy and the upholding of international law. I hope that he can reassure us that he will be calling for an emergency debate in the House of Commons on this issue, with a view to overturning the Prime Minister’s unilateral decision to involve the United Kingdom in an illegal war.
I know that I would not be alone in regarding a failure by Chris Vince to speak out on this issue as an indication of an absence of a moral compass.
Yours sincerely
John Wake
Chris Vince famously got his picture in YourHarlow for being a founding member of Harlow's branch of Amnesty International, an organisation that fights for human rights around the world. John Wake has previously observed about Chris Vince that he is vague on most topics. To put it another way, Vince is a political lightweight and to expect him to come up with something original that deviates from Keir Starmer's script is exceedingly unlikely. However, I concur with the well argued sentiments expressed by John Wake.
000s of Iranians and others have been murdered because of Iran's brainwashed regime. Without "aggression" what chance do oppressed people have?
All wars are unjust. And Chris Vince will only ever mimic the words of Kier Starmer. Chris Vince does not care about anyone other than himself.
Totally agree 100% with you Pete.
What ever our differing opinions are on events on Iran, we all seem to agree that that Vince is a journeyman and will keep taking the £100k a year plus exspenses to support his party whilst sticking two fingers up to his constituency.
John, re "secure peace" that you quote, surely Iran is one of biggest war mongering nations in the world both directly and with its allies like Russia. So, how do you get a long term peace with a country like that? By talking? Seriously, they could surrender and the war would stop. But no, just like Hamas they prefer death and destruction rather than put their own people first.
It’s like I have always said, you can’t rely on someone with 2 first names. It’s in the rules.
I would also add that it seems to me that we never seem to learn the lessons of history and keep making the same mistakes over and over. Might is right and money talks. If you are not in a position to trade on either of these then your voice will not be heard no matter how many international bodies you create to try to give your opinions legitimacy
I think the noble peace prize, should be given to the Hedgehog in my garden.
John Wake, what is your take on the murder of around 40,000 unarmed Iranian protesters by the Iranian regime? Also, you fail to mention that Iran or its terrorist proxy Hezbollah made a completely unprovoked first strike on a British sovereign base in Cyprus when the UK was not engaged in the conflict. So do you not think we have the right to retaliate?
By the sounds of it sweet heart. The only people that are happy are the weapons industry and the makers of body bags.
Spot on letter from John Wake. As far as a 'moral compass' from Chris Vince goes, though , that train long ago left the station...
And just to point out it's perfectly possible to detest the Iranian regime and the war criminals Trump and Netanyahu at one and the same time. On last Saturday's 50,000 strong London demonstration against the war there were large numbers of exiled Iranian opponents of the regime...
