Reform leader Nigel Farage slammed over “bombshell new admission” over plan to “demolish” NHS

News / Thu 16th Apr 2026 at 12:51pm

REFORM UK Leader Nigel Farage has been blasted by the Health Secretary for making a “bombshell new admission” on his plan to scrap the NHS as we know it and introduce an insurance-based system of healthcare claims Labour.

Speaking to Sky News’ Beth Rigby, Farage admitted he wanted healthcare funding to be “spent through insurance companies”, which would see the current taxpayer-funded model of NHS care scrapped. The comments confirm that Reform UK is planning to replace the NHS with an insurance system.

Farage has previously maintained that the UK is “going to have to move to an insurance-based system of health care”, which could see people across the country having to pay thousands of pounds for routine healthcare – and even higher sums for more serious conditions.

A Labour spokesperson said: “If Reform brought in an insurance-based system, healthcare services in comparable countries show that patients could be left paying over £120 for a GP appointment, with an A&E visit potentially setting people back by upwards of £1,300.

Reform MPs also opposed Labour’s extra £26 billion investment in the NHS in Parliament, and instead promised to introduce tax cuts for private healthcare and insurance, which would only benefit the wealthiest.

This latest dangerous admission from Farage comes as new data for the NHS in England shows waiting lists have been cut by 400,000 since Labour took office, ambulances are arriving five minutes faster to heart attack and stroke patients, A&E waiting times are falling, and a record proportion of patients were diagnosed or given the all-clear for cancer.

This positive progress has only been made possible by the relentless action the Labour Government has taken since taking office 18 months ago to fix our NHS after 14 years of Conservative neglect.

With Labour governments in Cardiff and Westminster, Wales has seen the longest sustained fall in waiting lists on record. Plaid Cymru have admitted that progress on waiting lists would stall in their first months in office.

“While 22 million patients in England use the NHS App to manage their appointments every month, in nationalist-run Scotland, unless you live in Lanarkshire and have a skin condition, you don’t have an NHS App”.

Wes Streeting MP, Labour’s Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, said:

“The cat’s out the bag – this proves why Nigel Farage must never be allowed to get his hands on our NHS. His plan to line the pockets of health insurance companies would see our NHS dismantled from top to bottom – and only the wealthiest getting the care they need.

“Reform would see working people paying a heavy price. They are not on the side of patients.

“With Labour in Government, patients will be treated based on need, not how much you have in your pocket. And it will always be free at the point of use and there for you when you need it. No ifs, no buts.

“The NHS is on the road to recovery with Labour. Don’t risk it with Reform”

Earlier this week, Streeting launched a staunch defence of the NHS remaining free at the point of use as a new report from the Institute for Public Policy Research revealed that moving to an insurance-based healthcare system would be more expensive and disruptive, just as Labour’s action is getting the NHS back on its feet. The report also found that insurance systems spend on average £7 billion more on administration and are far more unequal for patients than the NHS. Referring to Farage, Streeting warned that patients “cannot trust this con artist with the NHS”.

The press release continued: “Farage’s plan would mark a fundamental break from the founding principles of the NHS: a healthcare system that is free at the point of use, where care is based on need, and not the ability to pay.

Under the Conservatives NHS waiting lists reached record highs. But thanks to the fair choices made by the Labour Government – opposed by both Reform and the Tories – patients are already seeing positive results.

“Labour promised an extra two million appointments, and has instead delivered 5.2 million more appointments across the first year in government. The government has also hired 2,000 more GPs, recruited almost 8,000 extra mental health workers, and is investing in new Neighbourhood Health Centres, offering a full range of services open 12 hours a day, six days a week. A transformed NHS app will also act as the digital front door to the NHS to allow patients to book appointments, manage medicines and view your medical records”.

Harlow MP Chris Vince added: “The mask has slipped when it comes to Reform’s plans for the NHS. I am really proud of what we have achieved in such a short space of time since coming into Government.

A record number of appointments and waiting time falling in Harlow. We also finally have a concrete plan for a new hospital and the money set aside to build it.

“Reform would put all this progress at risk. Only Labour can be trusted to rebuild our NHS”

This local election is not about the NHS or immigration. It is about Harlow. Four days ago, on YH, I asked Scott Hegley the local leader of Reform UK to set out Reform's specific policies and plans for Harlow, how they would improve on those of Dan Swords administration and what skill sets his team had to implement them. Scott replied he would provide me a full answer later in the day. Despite chasers from me and other residents, he has not answered or provided the promised information, although he has had time to make posts on YH Facebook on other matters. This leads me to believe that Reform's whole approach is essentially negative and that they clearly have no well-thought out plans. Any leader should have this information at their fingertips. It is obvious that they will bring nothing to Harlow and will only serve to block the tremendous progress made by Dan Swords local Conservatives. Scott has not honoured his word and we should be highly sceptical of him and his candidates.

What Yvonne has written is 100% accurate as I was following the post because I was considering Reform. However, since Scott clearly has no word, there is no way I would vote for charlatans and blatant liars. I will stay with Dan Swords who is doing a great job for Harlow.

The Harlow election is not about Keir Starmer, Nigel Farage or Kemi Badenoch. It is not about immigration or the NHS or Defence. It is about Harlow only. We are being asked to choose who is best placed to run Harlow. In this regard we have the impressive track record of Dan Swords and his team versus the grim failures of Labour and the totally inexperienced Reform who have no clear policies at all local level. The choice is clear. Let's not risk losing the best administration for years. Let Dan Swords carry on with the regeneration and improvements.

The NHS staff are lazy and entitled, abolish it, it is a service which is more likely to hurt than help. interesting that no other country has ever copied it and once the assisted dying bill passes it will be even worse.

Mr George

Adam, you're talking nonsense. And if you think the USA type system would be anything better, you're mistaken, badly.

We should be looking at local issues as this a local election. Maybe Reform could set out their plans for Hatlowcas the leaflet I received from them says nothing.

I've been waiting 2 years for an NHS hearing test appointment.

The electorate will get the chance to vote on issues like this at the next general election and if Reform get in it will be on the manifest they produce at the time. In the meantime lets focus on who will do the best for Harlow and deliver solving local issues.

Mr George it is not a UK / USA choice the EU healthcare systems are much better as is Japan etc. the NHS is flawed concept and has become a national liability. Oh for what it is worth the US system works very well if you have insurance. my staff there love it and it costs them less than the NHS costs.

Molly
2026-04-16 19:33:47

I agree with Fed Up Pensioner, this a strictly local election and we need only about who is best for Harlow. Looking at Dan Swords administration's performance, this should be a one horse race.

Is it not astounding that the local leader of Reform, Scott Hegley can't even set out Reform's policies for the town even after he promised to on YH? How can anyone be expected to vote a party that doesn't have a plan? They are no different from Labour. I say let Dan Swords and his team continue with job. Reform and Labour are completely useless locally.

Steve Crewe

Who would vote for that. Our Britain has been the envy of the world because our NHS is fantastic.

Holly
2026-04-16 20:19:28

Our NHS is used and abused by all the people that have not payed into the system for years. Too many come over and jump the queue…a & e waiting times have reached record high, patients sleeping on make shift beds in corridors. All these left wing politicians fighting to keep the system to keep their core voters happy! Bring on a pay per use system

Val

I think at this time YH should concentrate on local issues ahead of the May elections. Why not ask each party to set out their local policies for Harlow so voters can compare? It is not helpful to have posts that relate to national issues over which the Council has no role or influence.

This country is going to the dogs. We need to get rid of this disgraceful government, but we need to support the team that is improving Harlow. That is the team of Dan Swords.

Is the elusive Scott Hegley, the local Reform leader. -who doesn't even live here - going to answer Yvonne? Come on Scott! Show us what you are made of! 🤣

Julia

I will vote for the best for our country and for our town. In the General Election, it will be Reform, but locally, it has to be Dan Swords local Conservatives. Dan has a passion for Harlow and a great record. He has also defended us against unlawful travellers invading our town and stopped far left Newham council from buying Burnt Milks development to dump loads of undesirables here. Dan is Harlow's best advocate and our best defender. He has earned our trust. Unfortunately, Reform locally are not in the same league.

What an absolute crock! Labour have been wheeling out the same rubbish for three decades that any party on the right, be that Tories, UKIP or now Reform want to privatise the NHS. It's nonsense now, always has been, always will be. Aren't resident doctors currently on strike under this Government? What they hope you forget is that the Blair/Brown Government did more to privatise the NHS than any other in history! What with PFI agreements, Virgin Health, Private Cleaners, Private Car Parks etc that the service is still trying to recover from.

Mr George
2026-04-16 23:55:48

Adam, the EU you say? Not at all. If you have no money to buy insurance you suffer. I have a good friend in Italy who is poor, it's hours of waiting in queues for basic tests, to get her medication sorted by the hospital and very very long waits to see consultants. Japan you say? No insurance equals basically no help unless you pay it all. If you have insurance, you still have to pay a proportion of the costs of your meds, your stay in hospital - on top of your insurance, same as the USA. I will find it sad that the UK loses the NHS because people vote a party based on 'boat people'.

Chris

Nigel Farage and Reform are racist nutters exploiting the problems of the poor to gain power for the rich. Good luck voting for them!

Adam

Mr George as while the UK there is not 8 M on the waiting list, even being added to the waiting list is being rationed and we have the NHS which has the worse outcome for cancer and unnecessary deaths in the world. it is honestly terrible, I would not send my dog to PAH my few engagements with it have been so bad and nearly deadly. If you are going to be in hospital in the UK especially as elderly you need someone to advocate for you as they will kill you without a second thought. envy of the world maybe 50 years ago, now it fails us all and costs us a fortune for the pleasure. why should people not pay for themselves.

A new study by the Institute for Public Policy Research comparing taxpayer funded versus insurance based healthcare systems says taxpayer funded models like the NHS provide better value. The report says: "there is no evidence that insurance-based healthcare systems out-perform tax-funded systems. The analysis - spanning 22 high-income countries - concludes that switching the NHS to a European-style insurance system would not improve performance across measures of capacity, access, quality, efficiency and equity." The Local Conservative bot farm is equally keen not to address this issue as many within them want poor people to pay through the nose for healthcare in an insurance based system. After all, the Conservatives never wanted the NHS and done their best to run it into the ground. Their Local Conservatives deliberate silence on this means they have lost my vote this May. Tories and Reform are the same monkey on the backs of workers.

Kier starmers premiership went catastrophically wrong when he entered no 10 because he is a man that has No love or regard for either our country or population here. He's a little man who is inebriated by power. It went wrong when he made it his mission to eraise our national identity in favour of a globalist agenda. It went wrong when he went hell for leather to get us back into the E. It went wrong when he took the British public for idiots, thinking they would believe his lies and overlook his deceit. It went catastrophically wrong when he put in place a two tier judicial system. It went wrong when he welcomed this tidal wave of illegal migrants into our country with the incentives that would make anyone want to swim the channel to receive them, never mind coming over in boats It went wrong when he made shoplifting legal and we are made to pay the shortfall with higher prices. It went wrong when he force fed us cultural enrichment and cultural cohesion. Both of which have been total disasters within our social structure and have caused unreachable divisions within our nation. It went wrong when he betrayed our farmers, our Waspi women and over a quarter of a million children, who have been abused by men from cultures where this kind of behaviour is deemed normal. It went wrong when he made it normal for those who don't want to work get more in benefits than this who get up at the crack of dawn every morning and slog their tripe out day after day monotonously and give half their wages to keep illegal migrants, pay for net zero madness and ridiculous DEI ideologies. It went wrong when he ignored for our main ally to use the air bases in Britain even after our base in Cyprus had been bombed by our enemies. It went wrong when he gave jobs to the boys knowing full well their past form then pleading plausible deniability when the scandals were brought to the floor. It went wrong when he allowed Ed miliband to stop us drilling for our own oil and gas, even though our country is on the verge of bankruptcy and we have to revert to paying top dollar for both from other countries. This man has made the Labour party and our country an international joke and embarrassment. In short keir starmer is a walking disaster area and should never of been placed in such an important powerful position and he should NEVER hold another position of high responsibility EVER AGAIN!! Now denying responsibility regarding mandelsons appointment tops the lot. Trying to wriggle his way out of responsibility. Of course he is responsible. If any of his MPs have any decentency or integrity they should get him out and call for a General Election. The general public have been lied to from start to finish, so therefor A General Election is the only right and decent thing to do!!

Mr George
2026-04-17 13:51:02

Adam, why do we have to get rid of the NHS? It needs to be fixed, not taken away. You say about cancer, could you imagine being someone who cannot afford insurance and getting cancer? Bottom of the pile - if you're lucky enough to get any treatment. Or if going down the Japan route, have insurance and still have to pick up about 30% of the tab, That's quite a few hundred thousand pounds as chemo and operations are very expensive, it's over £5k per dose. Or what if you wanted to start a family? Forcing people, no matter if need medical aid, to have children at home simply because they cannot afford a midwife. People moan and moan about the NHS and yes, after 14 years of tory screwing it up, it is totally awful, am facing the brunt of it myself. It will take time to fix but moaning about things will be nothing in comparison to losing it, all because people are not thinking beyond voting reform and trying to stop boat people. It's completely daft.

Mr George
2026-04-17 13:54:19

Mark, I think you'll find it was Maggie Thatcher who started the route down privatisation, who'd have thought it, eh? She would've done more too, had her fellow colleagues not stopped her.

Paul

Voting for Reform in the local election will not stop a single boat as this is not a matter for Harlow Council. Voting Reform will hamper the regeneration of our town. Don't risk it for nonsense.

Mr George utter nonsense you say? Or are you also in denial? This government is incapable of being upfront and honest. Keir starmer avoids answering questions put to him in his PMQs it's easier to avoid it and change the subject. I stand by everything I have said whether you believe it or not is of no consequence to me. We all have our own opinions and I respect that, it's called democracy

These claims from Wes Streeting regarding NHS plans by Reform UK are nonsense. Reform UK has never talked about scrapping any part of the NHS. Read Reform UK's manifesto on NHS. In summary: Free use as always Vouchers for people to use private care if NHS can’t meet waiting time promises Encourage people with more disposable income to use private health options tax incentives for private healthcare tax relief for people to help them supplement their options with private health insurance tax breaks for frontline staff to help make NHS work more attractive Addressing any waste of hiring too much management and not enough frontline staff Aims to eliminate NHS waiting lists in two years of Reform UK government Patient vouchers for private care if patients cannot see a GP within three days, a consultant within three weeks, or have surgery within nine weeks. Staff Retention: Proposes 0% basic rate income tax for three years for frontline health and social care 20% tax relief for people taking out private healthcare and insurance to reduce NHS burden.
